Solanke's stoppage-time header rescues 10-man Tottenham in 1-1 draw against Manchester United

Bryan Mbeumo put United ahead before Rodrigo Bentancur's dismissal left Tottenham facing an uphill battle

Dominic Solanke scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser as 10-man Tottenham Hotspur fought back to secure a 1-1 draw against Manchester United in their Premier League clash at Old Trafford on Saturday, denying the hosts a much-needed victory despite being reduced to 10 players.

Bryan Mbeumo had given United the lead in the 73rd minute, and Tottenham's prospects suffered a further setback when Rodrigo Bentancur was sent off five minutes later following an altercation with Luke Shaw. However, Solanke struck in the second minute of added time to earn the visitors a point and deepen United's disappointing start to the season.

The result left Michael Carrick's United with just six points from their opening six Premier League matches, their poorest start to a league campaign since the 1986-87 season. Tottenham, meanwhile, remained without a victory after six matches, although their spirited comeback offered encouragement to manager Roberto De Zerbi.

Tottenham dominate early exchanges

Despite entering the contest at the bottom of the Premier League standings, Tottenham began positively and created several opportunities during a first half in which they enjoyed the better of the attacking exchanges.

The visitors nearly took the lead in the third minute when Lucas Bergvall intercepted a misplaced pass from United goalkeeper Senne Lammens, but the Belgian recovered to prevent Solanke from capitalising.

Tottenham continued to threaten through Mohammed Kudus, Savio and Conor Gallagher, repeatedly finding space in United's defensive third. However, their inability to convert promising openings ensured that the teams went into the interval level at 0-0.

United struggled to establish control during the opening 45 minutes, with sections of the Old Trafford crowd expressing their frustration as the players left the pitch at half-time.

Mbeumo breaks deadlock

Tottenham continued to create chances after the restart, with Solanke missing a particularly inviting opportunity in the 51st minute when he failed to connect cleanly with Savio's delivery from close range.

United gradually improved their attacking movement and finally broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute.

Matheus Cunha played the ball into Mbeumo inside the penalty area, and the forward turned before directing a low left-footed shot beyond goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky into the bottom corner.

The goal appeared to put United in control, particularly as Tottenham's situation deteriorated just five minutes later.

Bentancur sees red

Bentancur, who had entered the match as a second-half substitute, was shown a straight red card in the 78th minute following a confrontation with Shaw. The incident began with a challenge involving the United defender, who reacted angrily before the two players confronted each other near the touchline. Bentancur was adjudged to have headbutted Shaw, prompting referee Stuart Attwell to dismiss the Uruguayan midfielder. Shaw and Tottenham defender Jan Paul van Hecke were also booked following the confrontation.

With Tottenham reduced to 10 players and United leading 1-0, the hosts appeared well placed to secure all three points.

United nearly doubled their advantage in the closing stages, but Kinsky produced an important save to deny Mbeumo his second goal.

Solanke delivers late equaliser

Tottenham refused to concede defeat and continued searching for an equaliser despite their numerical disadvantage. Their persistence was rewarded in the 92nd minute when Sandro Tonali delivered a cross into the United penalty area. Solanke outmuscled Lisandro Martínez and directed a glancing header beyond Lammens into the far corner.

The equaliser stunned the home supporters and secured Tottenham a point from a contest in which they had looked destined for defeat. It was Solanke's first Premier League goal of the season and came after he had squandered several earlier opportunities.

Managers reflect on missed opportunity

De Zerbi praised his players' determination and response to adversity, saying he was encouraged by the character they displayed after Bentancur's dismissal.

"I am very happy because I have seen the right spirit and character," the Tottenham manager said. He acknowledged that his side needed to improve its finishing but maintained that the performance demonstrated progress in implementing his tactical approach.

Carrick, meanwhile, expressed frustration at United's inability to protect their advantage against opponents playing with 10 men. "It's a game we should kill off. And we didn't," the United manager said.

The draw extended United's winless run to four league matches and meant they had failed to win their last three Premier League fixtures in which their opponents received a red card. Tottenham's winless start also continued, with the London club failing to win any of their opening six league matches for only the fourth time in their history. While neither team secured the victory it desperately needed, Tottenham emerged with encouragement from their late recovery, whereas United were left to reflect on another missed opportunity to revive their season.
