Odegaard caps dominant Arsenal display as Maresca’s Man City suffer 3-0 defeat

Calafiori netted the first goal after just 23 seconds before Havertz and Odegaard complete emphatic victory as Enzo Maresca endures nightmare Manchester City debut

Arsenal delivered an emphatic statement ahead of the new English football season as they swept aside Manchester City 3-0 to win the Community Shield at Cardiff's Principality Stadium. Riccardo Calafiori stunned City by opening the scoring after just 23 seconds before Kai Havertz doubled Arsenal's advantage in the first half. Captain Martin Odegaard completed the rout shortly after the interval as Mikel Arteta's Premier League champions comfortably overcame the FA Cup holders.

The result gave Arsenal another piece of silverware while handing new Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca a chastening defeat in his first competitive match since succeeding Pep Guardiola.

Lightning start

City barely had time to settle before Arsenal went ahead. Calafiori struck after only 23 seconds, giving the Gunners the perfect start and immediately putting Maresca's side under pressure.

The goal was the quickest in the Community Shield in 58 years and set the tone for a contest Arsenal controlled with greater intensity and sharpness.

Rather than sitting on their early advantage, Arsenal continued to press City and looked increasingly threatening when moving forward.

Their pressure produced a second goal in the 28th minute when Havertz headed home to give Arteta's men a commanding 2-0 advantage. City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma got his hands to the effort but was unable to prevent it from finding the net.

Odegaard seals win

Any hopes of a Manchester City comeback were effectively extinguished three minutes after the restart.

Odegaard surged into the penalty area, showed impressive composure to deceive Donnarumma and then finished into the vacant net to make it 3-0. The Arsenal captain's goal capped a dominant team performance and left City with an enormous task for the remainder of the contest.

New signing Christos Tzolis also impressed for Arsenal, contributing two assists and providing a persistent attacking threat. His display added further encouragement for Arteta ahead of Arsenal's Premier League title defence.

At the other end, Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya dealt with City's limited attacking threat and ensured the Gunners completed the match with a clean sheet.

Maresca's tough bow

For Manchester City, the afternoon represented a difficult beginning to the Maresca era.

City struggled to establish their usual control and were unable to consistently trouble Arsenal despite possessing considerable attacking quality. Arsenal's organisation and intensity restricted the opportunities available to their opponents, while the Gunners repeatedly looked dangerous going forward.

The defeat was City's first competitive fixture under Maresca following his appointment as Guardiola's successor. It also provided the new manager with an early indication of the work required as City seek to challenge Arsenal for domestic honours.

Arsenal lay marker

The victory continued Arsenal's remarkable record against Manchester City in the Community Shield. The Gunners have now won all four of their meetings with City in the competition, including their penalty-shootout triumph in 2023.

More importantly for Arteta, the performance offered an encouraging glimpse of his side's readiness for the campaign ahead.

Having captured the Premier League title last season, Arsenal enter the new campaign attempting to retain the English crown while also pursuing success in Europe following their defeat in last season's Champions League final.

A Community Shield victory alone will not determine the course of the season, but the manner of Arsenal's 3-0 demolition of one of their principal rivals offered an emphatic early warning that the champions are ready to go again.
