Mohun Bagan edge past NorthEast United 4-3 on penalties; East Bengal await in Derby final

Kaith saved two successive penalties as Mohun Bagan edged NorthEast United 4-3 after a goalless semifinal, setting up a blockbuster Kolkata Derby against East Bengal on Sunday

Goalkeeper Vishal Kaith emerged as Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s hero with two decisive saves in the penalty shootout as the Mariners defeated NorthEast United FC 4-3 to reach the Durand Cup final on Thursday. Neither side could break the deadlock during regulation time, with difficult wet conditions contributing to a scrappy semifinal that finished 0-0. But Kaith took control when the contest moved to penalties, denying Robin Yadav and Parthib Gogoi to seal Mohun Bagan’s passage to the title clash.

The result sets up a blockbuster Kolkata Derby in Sunday’s final, with Mohun Bagan taking on arch-rivals East Bengal FC for the trophy.

Wet conditions disrupt rhythm

Both teams found it difficult to establish control during the opening stages as the wet surface prevented sustained passing moves. Long balls behind the defensive lines became a frequent option as the two midfields struggled to dictate play.

Mohun Bagan produced the first meaningful attempt midway through the opening half when Liston Colaco tested NorthEast United goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh with a free-kick. Gurmeet reacted sharply to keep the effort out.

Kiyan Nassiri then found space from a difficult angle but chose to go for goal instead of looking for teammates inside the penalty area. His attempt struck the side-netting.

NorthEast United responded around the half-hour mark through Alaaeddine Ajaraie. The Moroccan controlled a high ball following a set-piece before attempting a volley that went narrowly wide.

With open-play opportunities proving difficult to manufacture, set-pieces became increasingly important. Both teams earned three corners during the first half but were unable to turn them into a breakthrough.

Gurmeet denies ambitious Sahal effort

One of the most eye-catching attempts of the half came shortly before the interval when Sahal Abdul Samad regained possession in midfield and spotted Gurmeet retreating towards his goal. Sahal attempted an audacious long-range effort, but the NorthEast United goalkeeper recovered quickly enough to prevent the shot from causing damage.

The teams consequently headed into the break goalless after a first half containing few clear opportunities. The pattern continued after the restart, with neither side able to consistently penetrate the opposition defence.

NorthEast United create better chances

NorthEast United gradually began to look the more threatening of the two teams and nearly opened the scoring around the hour mark. Abdul Rabeeh delivered a dangerous low cross from the right, but Ajaraie narrowly failed to make the required connection in front of goal. Ajaraie was involved again soon afterwards. After collecting a long pass on the left, he delivered a cross towards Etyan Gonzalez, who rose to meet the ball but could not direct his header on target.

Macarton Nickson later threatened following a well-constructed NorthEast United move. The attack began on the left before the ball was switched across the pitch and delivered into Nickson’s path, but his attempt from inside the area ended in the side-netting. Despite NorthEast United creating the better openings, neither team could find the decisive finish and the semifinal remained goalless at the end of regulation time.

Kaith takes charge in shootout

The first six penalties of the shootout were converted, leaving the teams locked at 3-3 and putting the pressure firmly on the fourth set of takers. That was when Kaith changed the contest. NorthEast United’s Robin Yadav stepped forward for his side’s fourth penalty, but the Mohun Bagan goalkeeper read the attempt and produced a crucial save.

Jamie Maclaren then calmly converted Mohun Bagan’s next penalty to give the Mariners a 4-3 advantage and leave NorthEast United needing to score to stay alive. Kaith delivered again, keeping out Parthib Gogoi’s effort to bring the shootout to an immediate end and spark celebrations among the Mohun Bagan players and supporters. The two saves ensured there would be no opportunity for NorthEast United to defend the Durand Cup crown in the final.

Kolkata Derby to decide the title

Mohun Bagan’s victory sets up the biggest possible finale to the tournament, with the Mariners facing East Bengal in a Kolkata Derby for the trophy on Sunday. East Bengal had booked their place in the final after overcoming SC Delhi on penalties in the other semifinal. With both Kolkata giants now one victory away from the title, the Durand Cup will conclude with Indian football’s most celebrated rivalry taking centre stage — and Mohun Bagan will enter the contest with Kaith once again having demonstrated his ability to deliver when the pressure is at its highest.
