Erling Haaland goes past Rooney, Aguero to secure massive 'Manchester Derby' Premier League record

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has added another record to his remarkable goalscoring career, moving past Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero to become the outright leading scorer in Manchester derbies in the Premier League era. The Norwegian reached the landmark after scoring the only goal in City’s 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, taking his Premier League derby tally to nine and moving clear of Rooney and Aguero, who scored eight each.

Haaland struck in the 60th minute to settle the 199th Manchester derby, turning in Josko Gvardiol’s cross to give City a precious victory despite the visitors having played with 10 men for much of the contest. The goal was initially ruled out for offside before being awarded following a lengthy VAR review. City had been reduced to 10 men in the 23rd minute after Phil Foden was shown a straight red card following an incident involving United captain Bruno Fernandes.

Derby record falls

Haaland’s nine Premier League goals against United have come in significantly fewer appearances than those of the two players he has overtaken. Aguero scored eight times in 13 Premier League Manchester derbies during his hugely successful City career, while Rooney registered eight in 21 league derby appearances for United. Haaland’s latest strike also took him to nine goals against United across all competitions, drawing him level with Aguero and Bobby Charlton on the broader all-time Manchester derby scoring list.

The Norwegian is now only behind Joe Hayes and Francis Lee among Manchester City players for goals in the fixture across all competitions. Rooney remains the overall record-holder in Manchester derby history with 11 goals, leaving Haaland within striking distance of another major landmark as he continues his prolific spell in English football.

City make history

The victory also produced another Premier League record for Manchester City. They became the first visiting team to register 10 Premier League victories against Manchester United at Old Trafford, moving ahead of Liverpool, who have won eight times at the venue in the competition. Arsenal and Chelsea have each recorded six league victories there.

City’s triumph maintained their perfect start to the Premier League season, with four victories from their opening four matches. Despite spending more than an hour with 10 players, they successfully protected Haaland’s advantage as United failed to find an equaliser. Gianluigi Donnarumma made a crucial late save to preserve the clean sheet, while United also struck the woodwork through Marcus Rashford and Kobbie Mainoo.

The result left City level with Arsenal on 12 points at the top end of the table, while Haaland’s latest decisive contribution further strengthened his extraordinary record against Manchester United and placed him alone at the summit of Premier League Manchester derby goalscorers.
