AC Milan beat Inter 3-1, extend unbeaten derby run to eight matches

Inter's nine-match unbeaten Serie A run ended as Ruben Amorim's side climbed to fourth, four points behind the league leaders

AC Milan extended their unbeaten run against arch-rivals Inter Milan to eight matches across all competitions with a commanding 3-1 victory in the Derby della Madonnina at San Siro on Saturday, dealing a blow to Inter's Serie A title ambitions.

Diego Moreira emerged as the standout performer, scoring once and providing two assists as Ruben Amorim's side produced an impressive attacking display to secure their fourth consecutive victory over Inter.

Christian Pulisic opened the scoring in the fourth minute before Adrien Rabiot doubled Milan's advantage six minutes later. Alessandro Bastoni pulled one back for Inter in the 22nd minute, but Moreira restored the two-goal cushion with a brilliant free-kick shortly before half-time.

The result extended Milan's unbeaten streak in the city derby to eight matches, comprising six victories and two draws, while ending Inter's unbeaten start to the 2026-27 Serie A season.

AC Milan made a flying start, taking the lead after just four minutes through Pulisic, who converted a well-delivered cross from Moreira.

The Belgian winger found space on the flank before sending a precise delivery into the penalty area, where Pulisic rose to head the ball past Inter goalkeeper Josep Martinez.

Milan doubled their lead in the 10th minute, with Moreira again playing a decisive role. His corner found Rabiot, whose left-footed delivery went into the net off the post.

The two early goals left Inter chasing the contest, although Cristian Chivu's side gradually recovered and began creating opportunities.

Inter pulled a goal back in the 22nd minute when Bastoni headed home from close range after Manuel Akanji flicked on a corner delivered by Hakan Calhanoglu.

The goal shifted momentum towards Inter, who increased the pressure on Milan's defence in search of an equaliser.

However, goalkeeper Mike Maignan produced several important saves to preserve the hosts' advantage.

Inter threatened to level the scores as the first half progressed, with Calhanoglu and Djed Spence among those testing Maignan.

The French goalkeeper produced an outstanding reflex save to deny Spence from close range in the 33rd minute, keeping Milan ahead during a difficult spell.

Moreira then delivered the decisive moment of the match in the 43rd minute.

Having already created Milan's opening two goals, the winger curled a left-footed free-kick over the defensive wall and beyond Martinez to make it 3-1.

The strike completed a remarkable first-half performance for Moreira, who was directly involved in all three of Milan's goals.

His contribution ensured that the hosts entered the interval with a commanding advantage despite Inter's attempts to recover from their poor start.

Inter attempted to increase the pressure after the restart, but Milan's organised defensive performance prevented the visitors from finding a way back into the contest.

Andy Diouf tested Maignan early in the second half, while Carlos Augusto failed to convert a promising opportunity after being picked out by Calhanoglu.

Milan continued to defend effectively, with their midfield limiting the space available to Inter's attacking players.

Marcus Thuram was denied during a goalmouth scramble in the 70th minute, while further attempts from Inter failed to trouble the hosts sufficiently.

Despite registering 19 shots during the match, Inter struggled to convert possession and attacking opportunities into goals.

Maignan remained alert throughout the second half, making further saves as Milan protected their two-goal advantage.

The hosts nearly added a fourth goal in stoppage time, but Martinez produced a diving save to deny Cisse.

The final whistle confirmed Milan's 3-1 victory and another successful outing against their city rivals.

Following the defeat, Inter manager Cristian Chivu admitted that his team had failed to approach the derby with the required intensity.

"It hurts to lose a Derby, especially when we had hoped for a different outcome, given the season we're having and what we have to defend," Chivu said.

He acknowledged that injuries and other selection difficulties had forced the team to make adjustments, although he maintained that Inter had opportunities to recover.

"We got our approach wrong, but there were positives too. We pulled a goal back to make it 2-1, and if it had not been for Maignan's save, we could have equalised," he said.

Chivu also expressed concern over the team's attitude, suggesting that Inter needed to rediscover the determination that had characterised their previous performances.

"We need to rediscover our humility, keep our feet on the ground and show greater determination," he said.

The Inter manager credited Milan for their performance but stressed that his players needed to respond quickly ahead of their next fixture.

The victory lifted AC Milan to fourth place in the Serie A standings with 21 points from 10 matches, following six wins, three draws and one defeat.

Inter remained on 25 points after eight victories, one draw and their first league defeat of the season.

The result left Inter second in the standings, level on points with leaders Lazio, who held the advantage on goal difference.

Milan, meanwhile, moved within four points of the top two, strengthening their position in the race for European qualification and keeping themselves in contention near the top of the table.

The victory also reinforced Milan's recent dominance in the Derby della Madonnina, with Inter unable to register a win in their last eight meetings across competitions.

For Amorim's side, the result provided a timely response following their recent home defeat to Bologna and offered renewed momentum ahead of their upcoming Europa League fixture against Ferencvaros on November 5.
