Federer receives Hall of Fame ring at US Open

Roger Federer returned to the US Open on Monday night to receive his official International Tennis Hall of Fame ring at Arthur Ashe Stadium, adding another honour to one of tennis’ most decorated careers. The Swiss great received the ring just two days after being formally inducted into the Hall of Fame in Newport alongside former American player and broadcaster Mary Carillo. Former world No. 1 and three-time US Open champion Kim Clijsters presented Federer with the ring in front of the New York crowd. Federer raised his hand to display it before pumping his fist as spectators cheered.

Special return to New York

Federer described his return to New York as a special experience and reflected on the people who supported him throughout his career. The 45-year-old said his Hall of Fame induction had given him an opportunity to look back at those who helped him and at what tennis had given him. Before receiving the ring, Federer watched American Ben Shelton defeat Tallon Griekspoor in the opening round.

The presentation carried particular significance as Federer received the honour on the same court where he won five consecutive US Open singles titles between 2004 and 2008. Across 18 appearances at the tournament, he compiled an 85-13 singles record.

Career of remarkable achievements

Federer retired from professional tennis in 2022 after a career spanning more than two decades. He won 103 tour-level singles titles, including 20 Grand Slam crowns, and spent 310 weeks as the world No. 1. He became the first man to win 20 major singles titles and finished his career with eight Wimbledon crowns, six Australian Open titles, five US Open trophies and one French Open championship.

Federer had also returned to Arthur Ashe Stadium last week for a special exhibition, playing against former rival Andy Roddick before teaming up with John McEnroe to face Roddick and Andre Agassi.
