Nepal to host 8-team World Cup Qualifier Playoff from December 4

Four places in the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Global Qualifier were up for grabs as Nepal prepared to host the 18-day tournament

Nepal will host the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier Playoff from December 4 to 21, with eight teams competing for the remaining four places in the 10-team Global Qualifier for the 2027 ODI World Cup, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Friday.

The tournament will be played in a round-robin format, with hosts Nepal opening their campaign against Italy at the Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground on December 4. Namibia and Uganda will face each other simultaneously at the Upper Mulpani Cricket Ground.

Canada, Kuwait, Jersey and the United Arab Emirates are the other four participating teams, completing the eight-nation competition.

Each team will play seven matches, facing every other side once, with the top four advancing to the Global Qualifier.

The tournament represents an important stage in the qualification pathway for the 2027 Men's Cricket World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

The four successful teams from the Nepal playoff will join six nations that have already secured their places in the Global Qualifier.

The West Indies and Ireland qualified as the two highest-ranked teams outside the automatic World Cup qualifiers, excluding Full Member co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe.

The United States, Scotland, the Netherlands and Oman secured direct qualification after finishing in the top four of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2.

The Global Qualifier will determine the final four teams progressing towards the 2027 World Cup, with the winner securing direct entry into the tournament's group stage.

Teams finishing second, third and fourth will advance to the newly introduced Super Series.

ICC General Manager for Events and Operations Gaurav Saxena described the playoff as an important opportunity for emerging cricketing nations to progress towards the global tournament.

"The Qualifier Play-off is a crucial stage in the pathway to the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027, and I am sure all eight teams will be eager to seize this opportunity and secure a place in the next stage," Saxena said.

He emphasised the importance of Associate nations in expanding cricket's international reach and strengthening competition beyond the established cricketing powers.

"Associate cricket is vital to the continued growth and global development of our sport. Competitions such as this provide teams with valuable opportunities to showcase their talent, gain experience and raise their standards," he said.

Saxena also welcomed the progress made by the participating teams in recent years and expressed confidence that the tournament would produce competitive cricket.

"The progress these teams have shown in recent years is encouraging, and I am confident we will witness some exciting and competitive cricket. On behalf of the ICC, I wish all the teams the very best," he added.

The hosts will then face the UAE on December 10, Jersey on December 12 and Canada on December 14.

Their remaining two fixtures will be against Namibia on December 18 and Kuwait on December 21.

All seven of Nepal's matches are scheduled at the Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground.

The second venue, Upper Mulpani Cricket Ground, will host several other fixtures, including Namibia's opening encounter against Uganda and Kuwait's match against Canada on December 5.

The tournament will conclude on December 21 with Nepal facing Kuwait and Canada taking on Uganda.

The 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup will be staged from October 2 to November 21 across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.

The competition will feature 14 teams competing in 57 matches across 12 venues.

The expanded tournament will provide opportunities for emerging cricketing nations to compete against established international teams.

For the eight nations participating in Nepal, the December playoff represents another opportunity to remain in contention for a place at the global event.

With four qualification places available, the competition will determine which teams advance to the next stage of the World Cup qualification process.
