Jos Buttler scripts history, becomes first batter to score 15,000 T20 runs

England's Jos Buttler has created T20 history by becoming the first batter to score 15,000 runs in the format, reaching a milestone no player had previously achieved across domestic, franchise and international Twenty20 cricket.

The 36-year-old crossed the landmark while playing for Lancashire against Northamptonshire in the Vitality Blast on Thursday. Buttler entered the match needing 14 runs to reach 15,000 and got there during another fluent innings, further extending his position at the top of the all-time T20 run-scoring charts.

The milestone adds another significant achievement to one of the most successful careers in the shortest format. From England colours to the Indian Premier League and other franchise competitions, Buttler has established himself as one of T20 cricket's most prolific and destructive batters.

First to 15,000

Buttler reached the landmark in his 484th T20 innings, becoming the first player in the format's history to cross the 15,000-run barrier.

His record has been built at a strike rate comfortably above 140, reflecting not only longevity but also his ability to score quickly throughout his career. Buttler has accumulated his runs while playing for England and several domestic and franchise sides across the world.

The former England white-ball captain has also struck multiple centuries and more than 100 half-centuries in T20 cricket, while clearing the boundary hundreds of times during a career that has stretched across nearly two decades.

His ability to open the batting, operate in the middle order and finish innings has made him one of the most adaptable batters of the T20 era.

Ahead of the greats

Buttler's achievement takes him into territory not previously reached by some of the format's biggest names. West Indies great Chris Gayle, long regarded as the benchmark for T20 batting, finished his career with 14,562 runs.

Gayle's record had stood as one of the most imposing numbers in the shortest format, built during a career in which he dominated franchise leagues around the world and became the first batter to score a T20 century.

Buttler has now moved beyond that mark and become the first member of the 15,000-run club.

His tally also places him ahead of other prolific T20 batters, including Alex Hales, Kieron Pollard, Virat Kohli and David Warner, underlining the scale of the achievement.

A T20 constant

Buttler's rise through the T20 run charts has mirrored the evolution of the format itself. He made his T20 debut in 2009 and subsequently developed into one of England's most influential white-ball cricketers.

His international career has included England's 2019 ODI World Cup triumph and the 2022 T20 World Cup title, while his performances in franchise cricket have made him one of the most recognisable overseas players in the IPL.

Known for his 360-degree strokeplay, power and ability to accelerate rapidly, Buttler has remained a major presence in the format even as T20 batting has become increasingly aggressive.

Crossing 15,000 runs now gives him a landmark entirely his own — the first batter in the history of Twenty20 cricket to reach a five-figure tally beginning with 15.
