India's Bangladesh tour awaits government clearance: BCCI source

India's proposed white-ball tour of Bangladesh remains uncertain, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India awaiting formal clearance from the Central government before committing to the series. A BCCI source said on Thursday that the board cannot take a final decision on the tour until it receives the government's approval. Discussions are continuing with the Bangladesh Cricket Board as well as through diplomatic channels. India are due to travel to Bangladesh for a six-match white-ball series comprising three ODIs and three T20 Internationals in September. The series had originally been scheduled for August 2025 but was postponed by a year following discussions between the two cricket boards.

BCCI awaits Centre's nod

According to the BCCI source, the board is in touch with the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh and the matter is currently under consideration.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has also been communicating regularly with its Indian counterpart and is awaiting clarity over whether the tour will go ahead.

The BCCI is understood to have made it clear that a decision involving the Indian team's travel to Bangladesh cannot be taken by the cricket board alone and requires the government's approval.

With the proposed series only weeks away, both boards will require a decision soon to finalise arrangements for the matches.

Six matches planned

India and Bangladesh are scheduled to play three ODIs and three T20Is during the tour.

The BCCI and BCB had jointly announced in July 2025 that the original August 2025 series would be deferred to September 2026, citing the international commitments and scheduling requirements of both teams.

At the time, the BCB said it was looking forward to hosting India for the rescheduled series.

The proposed tour has since assumed greater significance following a period of friction between the two cricket boards.

Relations hit turbulence

Cricketing relations between India and Bangladesh came under strain earlier this year following a series of disputes.

One major flashpoint involved Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman and his participation in the 2026 Indian Premier League. The episode was followed by differences surrounding Bangladesh's participation in the T20 World Cup in India.

Against this backdrop, uncertainty has surrounded India's scheduled visit to Bangladesh, although communication between the BCCI and BCB has improved in recent months.

Reports have indicated that officials on both sides are working to ensure that bilateral cricket does not suffer further.

Diplomatic talks underway

Bangladesh is also making efforts at the diplomatic level to ensure that the Indian team travels for the series. Discussions involving officials from the two countries have taken place as Bangladesh seeks confirmation of the tour.

The BCB has remained hopeful that the series will proceed, but the final call now rests with the Indian government.

Until that clearance arrives, the BCCI is unlikely to formally confirm India's travel plans, leaving the September series in suspense.
