Gold at stake as India, Pakistan set for Asian Games cricket blockbuster

India had demolished Sri Lanka by 124 runs to reach the final, while Pakistan had beaten Bangladesh by six wickets

India and Pakistan will add another chapter to their storied cricket rivalry when they meet in the men’s Asian Games gold-medal match at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin on Saturday, with defending champions India seeking a second successive title.

The October 3 final, scheduled to begin at 10 am IST, will mark the first meeting between India and Pakistan in men’s cricket at the Asian Games. Both teams reached the title clash after contrasting semifinal victories, with India crushing Sri Lanka and Pakistan overcoming Bangladesh in a rain-shortened contest.

India storm into final

India produced their most emphatic performance of the tournament in the semifinal, thrashing Sri Lanka by 124 runs. Batting first, Shreyas Iyer’s side posted 169/7 before bowling Sri Lanka out for just 45 in 9.5 overs.

Ishan Kishan anchored the Indian innings with an unbeaten 80 from 46 deliveries, striking four fours and five sixes. The left-hander held the innings together on a surface where scoring was not always straightforward and ensured India had a competitive total to defend.

Teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi provided early momentum with 38 from 21 deliveries. His aggressive contribution helped India maintain their scoring rate before Kishan took greater control of the innings.

India’s bowlers then made the target look enormous. Jasprit Bumrah struck twice in the opening over, removing Sineth Jayawardena and Sohan de Livera for ducks as Sri Lanka’s chase unravelled almost immediately.

Bumrah returned figures of 2/7, while Axar Patel took 2/8. Abhishek Sharma finished with 2/2 as Sri Lanka were dismissed inside 10 overs, sealing India’s place in the final in emphatic fashion.

Pakistan overcome Bangladesh

Pakistan had earlier secured their place in the gold-medal match with a six-wicket victory over Bangladesh. The semifinal was reduced to 13 overs a side because of a wet outfield, adding another tactical challenge for both teams.

Bangladesh recovered from early trouble to reach 111/7, largely through Towhid Hridoy’s 42 from 25 balls. Pakistan left-arm spinner Sufyan Moqim was instrumental in preventing Bangladesh from accelerating further, claiming three wickets for 26 runs.

Pakistan encountered problems of their own during the chase and slipped to 53/4. Abdul Samad, however, changed the momentum with an unbeaten 30 from 15 balls and helped Pakistan complete the chase with nine deliveries remaining.

The result set up the gold-medal contest many followers had anticipated once the knockout draw took shape — India against Pakistan, with an Asian Games title on the line.

First Asiad meeting

Despite cricket having featured at previous Asian Games, the two neighbours have never met in the men’s competition. Saturday’s final will therefore be their first head-to-head contest on the Asian Games stage.

India are appearing in the men’s cricket competition for only the second time. They won gold on debut at Hangzhou 2023 after their final against Afghanistan was abandoned because of rain, with India awarded the title on the basis of their higher seeding.

Pakistan’s previous best result in Asian Games men’s cricket was bronze at Guangzhou in 2010. They now have an opportunity to win their first gold, while India will attempt to retain the title.

Both teams entered directly at the quarterfinal stage as seeded sides. Their quarterfinal matches were washed out, with India and Pakistan advancing on the basis of their higher ICC T20I rankings before recording semifinal victories.

India carry strong attack

India’s bowling performance against Sri Lanka underlined the depth available to captain Shreyas Iyer. Bumrah’s new-ball threat, Axar’s control and the additional spin options provided by Abhishek Sharma, Washington Sundar and Ravi Bishnoi give India several combinations for the final.

The batting also carries considerable firepower. Abhishek, Sanju Samson, Kishan, Iyer, Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube provide experience, while Sooryavanshi has added youthful aggression at the top of the order.

Pakistan, captained by Sahibzada Farhan, have their own range of attacking options. Saim Ayub, Hasan Nawaz, Abdul Samad and Usman Khan form part of the batting group, while Abrar Ahmed and Sufyan Moqim give them potent spin options.

Gold on the line

The final will be played after Bangladesh and Sri Lanka contest the bronze-medal match at the same venue. For India, victory would mean successfully defending the title won three years ago and maintaining their perfect Asian Games record in men’s cricket.

For Pakistan, it represents an opportunity to claim their first Asian Games men’s cricket gold. More significantly, for both teams there is no series to recover in and no return fixture — one T20 contest will decide who stands on top of the podium.

With India coming off a 124-run semifinal victory and Pakistan having survived a difficult chase against Bangladesh, the stage is set for the first India-Pakistan men’s cricket encounter in Asian Games history — with gold awaiting the winner.
