Gill's historic double ton powers India to a 'record galore' ODI chase against West Indies

India produced a historic batting performance to defeat the West Indies by eight wickets in the second One-Day International at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, completing their highest successful ODI run chase and securing an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Captain Shubman Gill led the extraordinary pursuit of 406 with the fastest double century in ODI history, while Rohit Sharma struck his 35th ODI hundred as the hosts eclipsed several records in a remarkable contest.

The victory came after the West Indies had posted their highest-ever ODI total of 405 for seven, powered by three individual centuries. India surpassed their previous highest successful ODI chase of 362 against Australia in Jaipur in 2013, turning what appeared to be an imposing target into a landmark achievement.

Gill rewrites ODI history

Gill produced the defining performance of the match, reaching his double century in just 117 deliveries to break Ishan Kishan's record of a 126-ball double hundred against Bangladesh in 2022. It was Gill's second ODI double century, making him only the second batter after Rohit Sharma to register multiple double hundreds in the format.

The Indian captain had earlier reached his century in 62 balls, the fastest by an Indian captain in ODI cricket. He broke Rohit's previous record, established against Afghanistan during the 2023 ODI World Cup, and continued his assault on the West Indies attack to complete another remarkable individual milestone.

Gill's innings also marked his third consecutive ODI century on Indian soil. He had scored 110 in the opening ODI against the West Indies and continued his outstanding form in Guwahati, registering his 11th ODI hundred.

Rohit crosses 12,000-run landmark

Rohit provided India with an aggressive start, reaching his 35th ODI century in 72 deliveries. The former Indian captain struck 10 fours and six sixes on his way to the landmark, combining with Gill to put the West Indies bowlers under sustained pressure.

During his innings, Rohit also completed 12,000 runs in ODI cricket, becoming the third Indian after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli to achieve the milestone. His century and substantial opening partnership with Gill gave India the platform for their record-breaking pursuit.

West Indies' three centuries go in vain

Earlier, John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo had created history by becoming the first three West Indies batters to score centuries in the same ODI innings. Their contributions helped the visitors reach 405 for seven, surpassing their previous highest ODI total of 389 against England in 2019.

Campbell struck 101 off 68 deliveries, hitting nine boundaries and five sixes, before being dismissed by Gurnoor Brar. Hope contributed 104 off 94 balls, while Jangoo scored 114 off 77 deliveries as the pair shared a 182-run partnership for the third wicket.

Hope's century was his 20th in ODI cricket, taking him past Brian Lara's tally of 19. Chris Gayle remains the leading West Indies century-maker in the format with 25 hundreds.

Kuldeep reaches 200 ODI wickets

India's bowlers endured a difficult afternoon, but Kuldeep Yadav achieved a significant personal milestone by completing 200 ODI wickets. The left-arm wrist-spinner returned figures of two for 65, while Ravindra Jadeja and Gurnoor Brar also claimed two wickets each.

The West Indies' total was the third-highest conceded by India in ODI cricket, following South Africa's 438 for four in Mumbai in 2015 and Sri Lanka's 411 for eight in Rajkot in 2009. It also became the highest ODI total recorded at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.

India seal series with record victory

India's successful pursuit of 406 established a new national record for the highest successful ODI run chase. The previous mark of 362 had stood for nearly 13 years, making Wednesday's victory a significant achievement in India's limited-overs history.

The result gave India an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, with the final ODI scheduled to be played in New Chandigarh on October 3.
