Coming back into the side after being dropped for the fourth Test, Nair delivered under pressure and in testing conditions with the ball seaming around through the day

FALL OF WICKETS!

Day 1| Stumps (India 204/6)

Karun Nair and Washington Sundar return to the pavilion after end of play on the first day of the fifth Test cricket match between India and England, at The Oval, in London

On a tricky surface with overcast conditions, India have manouvered along well to finish with 204/6, with Karun Nair showing the way with an unbeaten 52. Jaiswal was out early, and then Rahul chopped one back onto his stumps. Gill was needlessly run out, and Sai Sudharsan and Ravindra Jadeja got starts but couldn't consolidate. Karun Nair was watchful throughout his innings and he found some support with Dhruv Jurel and Washington Sundar, as England won't be fully satisfied with their bowling effort. They had the better of conditions on this rain marred first day, but didn't bowl with enough consistency and bowled too many wide deliveries. Josh Tongue produced two jaffas to get right of the two left-handers, and Woakes and Atkinson chipped in with wickets as well. England will most likely be without Woakes for tomorrow and maybe the rest of this Test, as he hurt his left shoulder while diving to protect a boundary. That's all from this exciting and attritional day of cricket, back tomorrow!

49.3 Atkinson to Dhruv Jurel, out Caught by Brook!! Extra bounce, cut shot and another dismissal! This time off the outside edge though unlike KL Rahul. Good length delivery just outside off, leapt off the deck and nipped back in, got big on Dhruv Jurel as he looked to cut, he couldn't get on top of the bounce and it took a thick outside edge before flying to Brook at second slip, he moved well and took a good high catch to his right. Promise shown by Jurel fizzles out into nothing. India in a bit of trouble now, six down. Dhruv Jurel c Brook b Atkinson 19(40)

39.3 Tongue to Jadeja, out Caught by Jamie Smith!! Oopsy, I cannot get out of the way kind of push-defence from Jadeja. Another peach of a ball that a batter couldn't have done much about. Tongue has been wayward spraying it down the leg-side often, but he's bowled some tough balls as well and got two wickets in this spell. This short of length delivery jumped on Jadeja while moving away. Jadeja was hopping to try and defend, but all he managed was an outside edge almost unavoidable.Jadeja c Jamie Smith b Tongue 9(13)

35.4 Tongue to Sai Sudharsan, out Caught by Jamie Smith!! Edged and gone! Nothing the batter could have done there to escape this ball. Wobble seam short of length delivery angling in and heading bang on off stump. Sai Sudharsan had to play. He tried to defend off the back foot, but the ball nipped away late. Sai got squared up, the bat came down at an angle because of that and the outside edge was ineviatable. Sai grimaces, throws his head back and walks off without waiting for the finger. England have got a batter who was determined to dig deep. Sai Sudharsan c Jamie Smith b Tongue 38(108)

RAIN STOPS PLAY!

R Senthilkumar

Players are going off as the umpires call for the covers. Not a sudden downpour like we had around lunch time so the groundstaff have enough time. The hessian goes first on the pitch before the plastic sheets. Interestingly, it's not the hover cover here at The Oval.

27.2 Atkinson to Gill, out Gill Run Out!! That is suicidal from Gill. Just when there was a thought about the understanding these two have since their IPL time, Gill sets off on a run that was definitely not on. He defended this fullish delivery towards short cover. The ball wasn't far away from Atkinson though. Gill was halfway down the pitch despite Sai behaving like a traffic cop trying to stop his captain but Gill completely misjudged the run. Sai did take a step forward but you can't blame him there.

The Stat Sheet!

Every time Shubman Gill has crossed 20 runs in this series, he has gone on to make a hundred!

RAIN DELAYS START; PLAY RESUMES

The start of the second session on the opening day of the fifth Test between India and England has been delayed due to rain at The Oval on Thursday. The umpires will make an inspection of the ground at 7pm.

LUNCH! India 72/2 (Sai Sudharsan 25*, Shubman Gill 15*)

An unexpected heavy downpour here in London. Nobody was prepared for that. The umpires rush the players off the ground. The cricketers are bolting off the ground, and the groundsmen are hurrying onto the ground with covers. And that will also be Lunch. A grey morning in London has made for some superb cricket. On the grassiest pitch of the series so far, England chose to bowl first and they picked up an early wicket - as Jaiswal misjudged a Gus Atkinson delivery that angled in sharply. KL Rahul and Sai Sudharsan held fort superbly, showing great technique against the moving ball. However, after all that hard work in the first hour, KL Rahul chopped one back onto his stumps trying to cut Chris Woakes. Shubman Gill has come out and looked positive, while Sai Sudharsan has feasted on anything too full from the English bowlers. The English seamers were a bit wayward and bowled too wide at times, but they still have two wickets to show for it. It is pouring down quite strongly now, many have left their seats to take shelter. Hopefully the rain subsides soon and we'll get more of engaging cricket. Hang around.

15.1 Woakes to Rahul, out Bowled!! Chopped on! A back of length delivery, shapes away but decks back in off the deck and gets a bit of steep bounce. Rahul tried to cut but that ball got too close to be playing that shot. Was forced to hack at it with an angled bat and he ends up chopping it back onto his stumps. All that hard work against the new ball from Rahul goes in vain. An innings that showed lot of early promise ends prematurely.

Rahul b Woakes 14(40)

A probing first hour from England under helpful conditions. They've got a wicket to show for it, but they would've definitely liked more. These two Indian batters have handled themselves quite well. They've played the ball late and right under their eyes - just as conditions like this demand.

3.1 Atkinson to Jaiswal, out Lbw!! A gamble that pays off big time! There were two sounds and that was the confusion but the two sounds were off the front and back pads. Seemed like Duckett wasn't exactly happy with the call to review. Even Stokes wore a puzzled look in the dressing room but Pope has got it right and does a double fist pump with a smile towards the England dressing room. Stokes now bursts into a laugh as he claps. Jaiswal falls early again, he's had lean returns since that century in the first Test. Good length delivery angling back into the pads, there was a hint of movement back in off the deck too and it went past the inside edge before hitting him just below the knee-roll on the pads. Feet didn't move all the much too and the reason the umpire probably remained unmoved was because of the two sounds. Turns out there was a big gap between bat and pad and Hawkeye returned with all-three reds.
