Duleep Trophy final: Kishan's hundred leads East's run glut on Day 1, reaches 385/4 against South

Skipper Ishan Kishan struck a fluent unbeaten century as East Zone seized control of the Duleep Trophy final, piling up 385 for four against South Zone at the MA Chidambaram Stadium Sunday. Kishan was unbeaten on 111 off 135 balls at stumps, having struck 14 fours and a six, while Kumar Kushagra was batting on 63. The pair added an unbroken 144 runs for the fifth wicket in just 26.4 overs to leave South facing a daunting task after a largely ineffective day with the ball. East’s strong total was built on contributions throughout the order, with Abhimanyu Easwaran making 72, Shikhar Mohan 85 and teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi providing early impetus with a 37-ball 44.

Kishan takes control

Kishan arrived with East at 147 for three, the only stage during the day when South appeared capable of wresting back control. Instead, the captain combined aggression with composure, initially adding 94 for the fourth wicket with Mohan before taking charge alongside Kushagra.

The left-hander reached his half-century from 71 deliveries before accelerating dramatically, needing only another 51 balls to move from 50 to 100. He brought up his 10th first-class century with a driven boundary off Shreyas Gopal, who was playing his 100th first-class match.

The innings also carried a personal milestone for Kishan as he crossed 4,000 runs in first-class cricket. His strokeplay became increasingly authoritative as the day progressed, with powerful pulls and commanding drives through the covers keeping South’s bowlers under sustained pressure.

Mohan proved an assured partner, displaying impressive judgment outside off stump while also showing his attacking range. He struck off-spinner Tripurana Vijay for a six and two fours in an over but missed out on a century when he chopped left-arm pacer CV Milind onto his stumps for 85.

Siraj goes wicketless

Earlier, Easwaran and Sooryavanshi gave East a flying start, putting on 100 for the opening wicket in just 14 overs. Sooryavanshi attacked from the outset before throwing away the opportunity for a bigger score with an ill-judged pull off Milind, offering substitute fielder Tanay Thayagarajan a straightforward catch in the deep.

Easwaran maintained the momentum with a controlled 72 before East briefly slipped to 147 for three. Kishan and Mohan quickly ensured that the setback did not develop into a collapse.

It was a particularly difficult day for India pacer Mohammed Siraj, who struggled to extract assistance from the flat surface and was repeatedly targeted by East’s batters. He finished the day with figures of 14-1-96-0, with Sooryavanshi, Easwaran and Kushagra all taking him on.

Kushagra compounded South’s problems late in the day, batting with increasing confidence alongside Kishan as the pair accelerated against a tiring attack.

With six wickets still in hand and Kishan firmly established, East will have an opportunity to push towards a massive first-innings total Monday, leaving South needing early breakthroughs to prevent the final from slipping further out of their reach.
