Bangladesh stun Australia in Darwin, script first-ever Test win Down Under

Bangladesh have scripted a major moment in their Test cricket history, defeating Australia on Australian soil for the first time. The victory came in Darwin, where the visitors produced a dominant all-round performance to beat the hosts by 56 runs.

The result marks Bangladesh's first Test win over Australia in Australia and gives them a chance to build on the momentum in the ongoing series.

Hasan Mahmud leads Bangladesh's bowling charge

Bangladesh laid the groundwork for the win in the opening innings after bowling Australia out for just 198. Hasan Mahmud was the standout performer, claiming six wickets and putting the Australian batting line-up under sustained pressure.

Steve Smith offered resistance with a 71-run knock from 109 balls, but found little support at the other end as Australia struggled to put together partnerships.

Bangladesh then made the most of their opportunity with the bat. Tanzid Hasan Tamim struck a century in only his second Test, scoring 101 to help the visitors post 426.

Mominul Haque added 49, while Najmul Hossain Shanto scored 84 and Mehidy Hasan Miraz contributed 65. Their efforts gave Bangladesh a sizeable 228-run first-innings advantage.

Cameron Green century not enough for Australia

Australia needed a much-improved batting effort in the second innings, but Bangladesh's bowling attack kept the pressure on.

Cameron Green emerged as the hosts' main resistance, scoring 104 from 201 deliveries. However, the rest of the Australian batting order could not provide enough support, and Australia were eventually dismissed for 284.

That left Bangladesh with only 57 runs to chase for victory.

Although the visitors lost Tanzid Hasan Tamim for a golden duck in the second over of the chase, the target proved too small for Australia to defend. Bangladesh completed the win and created history.

Bangladesh finally break Australia hoodoo

The two sides first met in a Test in 2003, also in Darwin. Before this match, Australia had won five of their seven Test meetings with Bangladesh, while one ended in a draw.

Bangladesh had previously defeated Australia once, in 2017 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. Shakib Al Hasan starred in that match with 89 runs and 10 wickets.

However, Bangladesh had never beaten Australia in Australia until now.

The ongoing series is the first Test series between the teams since 2023. Bangladesh will now look to go a step further and secure their first-ever Test series victory over Australia.
