Floods, landslides, quakes: Why Nepal is trapped in a deadly disaster cycle
Wednesday’s deadly flash flood along the Nepal-Tibet border has once again exposed how several natural hazards can collide in Nepal. Earthquakes, landslides, avalanches, floods and glacier-related events often feed into one another, turning a single mountain event into a much larger disaster.
The latest flooding in Rasuwa district swept through the Bhotekoshi-Lhende Khola system, destroying homes, roads, bridges and other infrastructure. More than 160 people have died and hundreds remain missing. While early reports pointed to an earthquake-triggered avalanche, later satellite and geological assessments indicated a glacial or ice collapse followed by a debris cascade.
So why is Nepal so vulnerable?
1. A restless tectonic zone
Nepal sits where the Indian and Eurasian plates continue to push against each other. The Indian plate is moving towards the Eurasian plate at roughly 20-21 mm a year, keeping the Himalayan region under immense geological stress.
The 2015 Gorkha earthquake showed how destructive this setting can be. Ground shaking can trigger landslides, block rivers and damage infrastructure, creating a chain of secondary disasters.
2. Mountains turn rivers into torrents
Nepal’s steep mountains and narrow river valleys leave little space for floodwaters to spread. Water rushing downhill gathers speed and can carry boulders, trees, mud, ice and debris with it.
That makes a Himalayan flash flood far more destructive than a slowly rising flood on flatter terrain.
3. A warming Himalayan region
Glaciers across the Hindu Kush Himalaya are losing mass as temperatures rise. ICIMOD’s 2026 assessment says glacier wastage in the region has doubled since 2000.
As glaciers retreat, meltwater can collect behind unstable moraines, creating glacial lakes. If these natural barriers fail, they can unleash sudden Glacial Lake Outburst Floods, or GLOFs.
4. Thousands of glacial lakes
A 2020 UN Development Programme inventory identified 3,624 glacial lakes across the Koshi, Gandaki and Karnali basins. Of these, 47 were classified as potentially dangerous.
The risk is constantly changing. New lakes can form on melting glaciers, expand and suddenly disappear, making mountain hazards difficult to track.
5. One hazard can trigger another
Nepal’s disasters rarely follow a neat pattern. Ice or rock can collapse, sending debris into a river. The debris may block the flow and form a temporary natural dam. When that barrier gives way, a powerful surge of water and debris can rush downstream.
The latest Rasuwa disaster is another example of this cascading risk.
6. Monsoon adds another threat
Nepal lies in the path of the South Asian monsoon. Heavy rainfall can saturate already unstable slopes, increasing the chances of landslides, river blockages and flash floods.
ICIMOD has also warned of rising temperatures and increasingly erratic monsoon conditions in the Hindu Kush Himalaya.
7. Landslides are a constant risk
Young, steep and geologically active Himalayan slopes are naturally prone to instability. Rainfall, earthquakes, road construction, deforestation, erosion and glacier retreat can add to that risk.
A landslide can bury roads, damage homes, cut power supplies or block a river, potentially setting up another disaster downstream.
8. People and infrastructure are concentrated in valleys
Nepal has limited flat land, so settlements and infrastructure often develop along river corridors and narrow valleys. Unfortunately, these are also the natural routes taken by floodwaters and landslides.
When a disaster strikes, entire communities can become isolated while roads, bridges and communication networks are damaged.
9. Rescue is harder in the mountains
The same terrain that magnifies disasters can make rescue operations extremely difficult. Blocked roads, destroyed bridges, heavy sediment and difficult weather can prevent emergency teams from reaching affected communities.
In some areas, helicopters become the only practical way to move survivors or supplies, but steep terrain and poor conditions can complicate aerial operations.
10. Human vulnerability adds to natural risks
Nepal’s exposure is not only about geography. The World Bank has highlighted the vulnerability of buildings and infrastructure to earthquakes, floods and landslides, particularly where construction practices and infrastructure standards are inadequate.
Rapid urbanisation can further increase the number of people and assets exposed to hazards.
Nepal’s vulnerability, therefore, comes from the way multiple risks overlap: tectonic activity, steep terrain, warming glaciers, heavy monsoon rain and settlements concentrated in exposed valleys. A disaster that begins high in the mountains can quickly become a crisis many kilometres downstream.
