'World players now fear Indian boxers': From local centres to global podiums, PM hails CWG champions

Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with India’s Commonwealth Games champions and congratulated them for their achievements, while highlighting the changing sporting landscape in the country over the past decade.

During the interaction, Modi said meeting Indian sportspersons at his residence had become a regular tradition during his tenure. He also stressed the influence athletes have on young people, saying their achievements can inspire children more strongly than conventional outreach.

“Your medal inspires them more than anything we could say by going to schools,” Modi said.

Athletes share stories of grit and triumph

The Prime Minister spoke to several athletes about their journeys, including their struggles with injuries, personal setbacks and the role played by their coaches.

He recalled the emotional moment of an athlete who broke down on the podium after overcoming years of injuries and hardships. He said such victories could have an impact far beyond the individual athlete.

“This victory of yours becomes a very big inspiration for the coming generations,” Modi said.

He also referred to an athlete who dedicated a Guru Purnima victory to his coach, highlighting the bond between players and those who guide them.

Khelo India and grassroots support highlighted

The discussion also focused on the growing confidence of Indian athletes on the international stage. Modi pointed to the rising profile of Indian boxers and the impact of grassroots programmes and regular competition support.

“World players have now started fearing these boxers too,” he remarked.

Modi said building sports facilities alone would not be enough to create sustained success. According to him, a wider sporting culture was necessary for India to consistently produce medal winners.

“Sports infrastructure is one thing, but the country achieves medals when a sports culture is built in the country,” he said.

He also highlighted the contribution of the Khelo India initiative and Sports Authority of India (SAI), which athletes credited with providing access to training facilities and helping them progress from local centres to international competitions.

Army athlete’s victory gets special mention

Modi also praised an Indian Army athlete who defeated a Pakistani opponent 5-0 on Kargil Vijay Diwas and dedicated the win to the Indian Army’s heroes.

“You have not merely increased the number of medals; you have prepared a generation,” Modi said while underlining the broader impact of the athletes’ achievements.

The Prime Minister also asked about upgraded sporting facilities in centres such as Varanasi and Bhopal and spoke about the support provided through SAI and Khelo India since 2018.

As the interaction concluded, Modi wished the contingent continued success and encouraged the athletes to maintain their winning momentum.

“Rest assured, in the future too you will be victorious and once again we will meet right here,” he said.

He also marked the birthday of a multi-time medalist by offering sweets and blessings, ending the interaction with the message: “He who plays, blooms”.
