Who is Deepak Mhaskey, BJP’s new IT Cell chief replacing Amit Malviya?
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has named Deepak Mhaskey as its new IT Cell chief, bringing a relatively lesser-known Chhattisgarh-based organiser into a key national role. His appointment comes as the party reshuffles its organisational team under national president Nitin Nabin.
Unlike the usual profile associated with a political digital strategist, Mhaskey has worked across several fields, including academics, agriculture, electoral data analysis, public-sector governance and state administration.
From Chemistry professor to BJP organiser
Born in 1968, Mhaskey holds an MSc in Chemistry, along with a diploma in cement technology and a certified course in computer programming. According to his profile submitted to Engineers India Limited (EIL), he began his professional career as a college Chemistry professor.
He later moved into agriculture and horticulture, with the profile recording more than three decades of experience in horticulture and organic farming. He also had a brief stint in road construction.
His professional journey eventually expanded into political and electoral data work. His EIL profile highlights his interest in collecting and analysing data, particularly electoral information and data related to government beneficiary schemes. It also states that reports prepared by him were submitted to and used by private and government agencies.
Long association with BJP in Chhattisgarh
Mhaskey has been associated with the BJP's organisational work in Chhattisgarh for several years. His LinkedIn profile lists his connection with the party's state IT Cell since 2009 and identifies him as a BJP state spokesperson.
His experience in the state's political organisation now takes him to the national level, where he will take charge of the party's digital machinery.
Experience beyond party politics
Mhaskey has also held positions outside the BJP organisation. He became a non-official independent director of Engineers India Limited in November 2021 and was reappointed for a second term in March 2025. His tenure on the EIL board ended in March this year.
During his tenure, he served on committees including audit, CSR, risk management, and nomination and remuneration.
A data-focused background
Mhaskey is also the chairman of Chhattisgarh Medical Services Corporation Limited, a state government entity involved in medical supplies and related services.
His experience with electoral data and government welfare schemes could be particularly relevant to his new assignment. His profile specifically mentions work involving national-level electoral data and beneficiary information, adding a data-oriented dimension to his political experience.
