Veteran Congress leader Sudarsana Natchiappan dies at 79

Veteran Congress leader and former Union minister E M Sudarsana Natchiappan died at his residence in Tamil Nadu’s Sivaganga district on Thursday following a brief illness. He was 79. A lawyer by profession and a long-time Congress leader, Natchiappan had served in both Houses of Parliament and was Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry in the UPA government led by then prime minister Manmohan Singh.

Five-decade career

A native of Eriyur in Sivaganga district, Natchiappan entered politics through the Congress in 1969 and went on to hold several organisational responsibilities in the party. His political journey included roles in the student and youth wings before he emerged as an important Congress figure in Tamil Nadu. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Sivaganga in 1999, defeating P Chidambaram, and represented the constituency until 2004.

Natchiappan subsequently moved to the Rajya Sabha, where he represented Tamil Nadu and served until 2016. During his parliamentary career, he was associated with several committees dealing with areas including law and justice, commerce, finance and defence. He also chaired the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice. In June 2013, he was inducted into the Manmohan Singh government as Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, a position he held until May 2014.

Lawyer and parliamentarian

Before and alongside his political career, Natchiappan practised as a lawyer, including in the Supreme Court. He pursued higher studies in law and held a doctorate. His parliamentary work frequently touched upon human rights, social justice, international relations and issues concerning Tamil Nadu. He also participated in international parliamentary engagements and represented India at the United Nations General Assembly.

Natchiappan remained associated with the Congress for decades and continued to be a prominent voice in the party’s Tamil Nadu unit after his parliamentary career. His death prompted condolences from political leaders across party lines. Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram and Congress MP Karti Chidambaram were among those who expressed grief, while DMK MP Kanimozhi and VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan also mourned his death and conveyed condolences to his family.
