Surgeon Vice Admiral Kavita Sahai is now the 1st woman Director General Medical Services (Navy)

Surgeon Vice Admiral Kavita Sahai becomes the first woman Director General Medical Services (Navy). She's been honored with the Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal too

Surgeon Vice Admiral Kavita Sahai has made history by assuming charge as the Director General Medical Services (Navy), becoming the first woman to hold this prestigious position. An alumna of Pune's Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), she has had a distinguished career in military medicine. Sahai, who was commissioned into the Army Medical Corps on December 30, 1986, was previously the first woman officer to be elected as Colonel Commandant of the Army Medical Corps. Before her new appointment, she served as the first woman commandant of the AMC Centre and College.

Specializing in pathology and oncopathology, Sahai completed her super-specialization at AIIMS, Delhi. She has held key academic roles, including professor and head of department, lab sciences, at Army Hospital Research and Referral (AHRR) and Base Hospital Delhi Cantonment (BHDC), as well as serving as a professor at AFMC. In addition to her contributions to medical education, Sahai was awarded a prestigious FAIMER Fellowship from Philadelphia in 2013-14. Her outstanding service has earned her several honors, including the Sena Medal in 2024 and the Vishisht Seva Medal in 2018. She has also been commended by the Chief of the Army Staff and the GOC-in-C, Western Command, on multiple occasions.
