Right-wing commentator TG Mohandas taken into custody over ‘girls enjoy rape’ remark

Right-wing political commentator TG Mohandas was taken into custody from his residence in Mattancherry, Kochi, on Sunday in connection with controversial remarks he allegedly made in a YouTube video about students protesting in Delhi over the NEET paper leak. A team from the Thiruvananthapuram Cyber Police Station, which is investigating the case, reached Mohandas’ residence at Koovappadam along with personnel from the local police station. Police said he would be questioned in detail as part of the investigation.

Police examine YouTube account, devices

During the operation, investigators collected information relating to Mohandas’ YouTube account and digital equipment allegedly used to create and upload the video. The case was registered following a complaint alleging that videos uploaded to his YouTube channel, Pathrika, were intended to disturb public peace and create fear and unrest. The investigation is being conducted by the Thiruvananthapuram Cyber Police Station.

Controversial remarks on Delhi protest

The case centres on comments Mohandas allegedly made while discussing the student agitation in Delhi over the NEET paper leak. According to police, Mohandas allegedly claimed that the protest could result in incidents of gang rape and went on to make the remark that “there are girls who enjoy being raped”. The remarks triggered widespread criticism after the video surfaced.

Remarks about ‘opening fire’ also under scrutiny

Investigators are also examining other comments allegedly made by Mohandas in the same video. He allegedly said that if he were in charge, he would impose a curfew and order the protesters to disperse. If they refused to comply, he said he would “open fire”. Mohandas allegedly went on to say that while some people could be killed or permanently injured in such action, the situation could be brought under control within hours and the bodies taken to hospitals.

Cyber Police continue probe

Police are now examining the digital material linked to the video as part of their investigation. Mohandas’ questioning is expected to focus on the circumstances in which the video was recorded and uploaded, as well as the statements that led to the complaint against him. The police action comes days after his comments drew attention amid the wider controversy surrounding the student protests in the national capital.
