Over Rs 965 crore earned through scrap disposal during recent special cleanliness campaign: Centre

The month-long campaign had covered nearly 19.85 lakh cleanliness sites across government offices, the highest number recorded in six editions

The Centre on Wednesday said the sixth edition of its special cleanliness campaign had generated Rs 265.23 crore through scrap and waste disposal, the highest revenue recorded in any single edition of the annual exercise.

The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) said the campaign, conducted from October 2 to 31, also resulted in the freeing of 276.8 lakh square feet of space across government establishments, compared with 233.75 lakh square feet during the previous edition.

In a series of posts on X, the department described the exercise as the largest special cleanliness campaign undertaken so far, citing participation by ministries and departments across the Union government.

The implementation phase had been successfully completed through collective efforts and coordination among various government organisations, it said.

According to the DARPG, the sixth edition generated Rs 265.23 crore from the disposal of waste and scrap materials, exceeding the revenue recorded in any of the five previous individual campaigns.

The department said the figure could increase further as additional information continued to arrive from participating government offices.

It also reported that the previous year's campaign had generated Rs 833.92 crore, although this figure appears inconsistent with the claim that the latest edition recorded the highest revenue.

The department emphasised that the initiative was aimed at improving workplace cleanliness, making better use of government premises and promoting more efficient administrative practices.

The sixth special campaign covered 19,85,338 cleanliness sites across the country, compared with 11,59,783 sites during the previous year's exercise.

The increase represented an expansion of more than eight lakh sites, making it the widest-ranging campaign in terms of locations covered since the initiative began.

The department said the exercise had also freed 276.8 lakh square feet of space, an increase of 43.05 lakh square feet over the previous campaign.

The space was recovered through cleanliness activities and the disposal of accumulated waste and unused materials at government establishments.

The DARPG said the results reflected wider participation and improved coordination among ministries and departments during the month-long implementation period.

The annual campaign, coordinated by the DARPG since 2021, aims to institutionalise cleanliness in government offices, improve record management and reduce pending administrative matters.

This year's exercise placed particular emphasis on the collection, segregation and responsible disposal of electronic waste, alongside the removal of obsolete materials and the clearance of unused office space.

The campaign covered Union ministries, departments, attached and subordinate offices, autonomous organisations and field establishments.

The DARPG said the results demonstrated the collective efforts of government departments to create cleaner workplaces, improve administrative efficiency and encourage environmentally responsible practices.
