Jharkhand BJP leaders meet Amit Shah, discuss state development and political situation

A delegation of senior BJP leaders from Jharkhand met Union Home Minister Amit Shah at his residence in New Delhi on Wednesday and discussed issues concerning the state's development as well as the prevailing political situation.

The meeting comes at a politically active time in Jharkhand, with the BJP stepping up its attack on the Hemant Soren-led government over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations and the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha intensifying its opposition to the Centre over changes to the country's mining law.

The BJP delegation discussed matters related to Jharkhand and the party's political activities in the state with Shah, who has played a key role in the BJP's organisational and electoral strategy over the years.

Recruitment row intensifies

The meeting assumes significance against the backdrop of protests by job aspirants over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC).

The state government recently announced action concerning a number of recruitment examinations after allegations of irregularities triggered protests by students and aspirants.

Students on Wednesday suspended a 26-day agitation but gave the Soren government two months to ensure a fair investigation into the recruitment process. The controversy has emerged as a major political issue, with the BJP repeatedly targeting the government over transparency in state recruitment.

Jharkhand BJP president Aditya Sahu had earlier questioned why the state government was reluctant to recommend a CBI investigation into the alleged recruitment irregularities. Former chief minister and BJP leader Raghubar Das has also backed the protesting students and demanded a central agency probe.

BJP steps up attack on Soren govt

The BJP, which is the principal Opposition party in Jharkhand, has sought to corner the JMM-led government on recruitment, governance and development issues.

Babulal Marandi currently serves as Leader of the Opposition in the Jharkhand Assembly, while the BJP has 21 MLAs in the 81-member House. The JMM-led ruling alliance holds a comfortable majority following the 2024 Assembly elections.

The meeting with Shah provided state leaders an opportunity to discuss the BJP's approach to issues currently dominating Jharkhand politics and its strategy for challenging the state government.

The BJP has particularly focused on youth and employment-related issues as protests over recruitment examinations have gathered political momentum.

Mining law another flashpoint

The political confrontation in Jharkhand has also widened over the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren recently urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu to reconsider the legislation, arguing that the changes could hurt the finances of mineral-rich states and affect their authority over mineral resources.

The JMM opposed the legislation in Parliament and is preparing a campaign in the mineral-rich Kolhan region to explain what it describes as the adverse implications of the amendments for Jharkhand.

Party leaders plan to take the issue to villages and towns, linking potential revenue losses to the state's ability to finance welfare and development programmes.

The BJP, meanwhile, is expected to counter the JMM's campaign as the two sides seek to shape the political narrative around the state's mineral resources and development.

Wednesday's discussions with Shah therefore came amid multiple political contests in Jharkhand, ranging from recruitment and employment to mining policy and Centre-state relations.

The meeting also signals the BJP leadership's continuing focus on Jharkhand after the party and its allies were unable to dislodge the JMM-led coalition in the 2024 Assembly elections.
