India successfully test-fires Agni-IV ballistic missile from Odisha

India on Thursday successfully carried out the user trial of the Agni-IV medium-range ballistic missile from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Odisha, marking another milestone in the country's strategic missile programme. The launch, conducted under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), successfully validated all operational and technical parameters, the Ministry of Defence said. The test was aimed at confirming the missile's operational readiness for the armed forces.

4,000-km strike capability

Agni-IV is a two-stage, surface-to-surface ballistic missile powered by solid-fuel rocket motors and is capable of striking targets at ranges of up to 4,000 kilometres. The missile occupies a crucial position in India's Agni missile family, bridging the gap between the shorter-range Agni-II and the longer-range Agni-V. It provides the country with a credible long-range deterrent capability against strategic threats.

Advanced indigenous technologies

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Agni-IV incorporates several advanced indigenous technologies, including composite rocket motors, high-precision navigation systems, modern avionics and digital flight control systems. The missile is road-mobile, enabling rapid deployment and enhancing operational flexibility. It is also designed with improved accuracy and survivability against hostile countermeasures.

Part of strategic modernisation

The latest trial comes amid India's continued efforts to strengthen its strategic deterrence capabilities through regular user trials and operational validation of its missile systems. Earlier this year, India successfully tested both the Agni-Prime, the latest generation canisterised ballistic missile, and the Agni-III, further reinforcing the operational preparedness of the country's strategic forces.

User trials by Strategic Forces Command

Unlike developmental tests conducted by DRDO, Thursday's launch was carried out by the Strategic Forces Command, which is responsible for operating India's nuclear-capable missile arsenal. Such user trials are conducted periodically to verify the reliability, accuracy and readiness of missile systems already inducted into service, ensuring they remain operationally effective under varying conditions.
