In a new reel, PM Modi urges citizens to celebrate National Handloom Day, promote handwoven products

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday called upon citizens to celebrate National Handloom Day on August 7 by embracing handwoven products and promoting India's rich weaving tradition, saying the occasion is an opportunity to honour the country's weaver community and strengthen the vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat. In a video message, the Prime Minister recalled the historic Swadeshi Movement, which began on August 7, 1905, describing it as a defining moment in India's freedom struggle that laid the foundation for self-reliance.

Recalls Swadeshi Movement

Modi said the Swadeshi Movement united people across the country in the fight against British rule and gave a new direction to India's independence movement. He said the spirit of self-reliance that emerged during the movement continues to inspire the country's development journey. "The nation can never forget the Swadeshi Movement that began on August 7, 1905. It gave a new direction to India's freedom struggle and laid the foundation for an Atmanirbhar Bharat," he said.

Appeal to celebrate Handloom Day

Referring to the recent celebration of Friendship Day, the Prime Minister urged people to observe National Handloom Day with the same enthusiasm. He said the occasion is an opportunity to recognise the contribution of millions of weaver families who preserve India's traditional textile heritage through handloom production. According to Modi, celebrating Handloom Day is also a tribute to the skill, dedication and craftsmanship of artisans who continue to create a wide range of handwoven fabrics.

'Share GRWM videos'

The Prime Minister encouraged people, especially the youth, to adopt handloom products and showcase them on social media. He suggested creating "Get Ready With Me" (GRWM) videos featuring handloom attire and sharing them online to inspire others to support Indian weavers. Modi said such content could help increase awareness of handloom products while giving global visibility to the craftsmanship of Indian artisans.

Support for weaver families

The Prime Minister emphasised that strengthening the economic condition of small and poor weaver families is essential to achieving the goal of an Atmanirbhar Bharat. He urged citizens to purchase handloom products and share their experiences online so that the talent and skills of India's weaving community receive wider recognition both in India and abroad. National Handloom Day is observed every year on August 7 to commemorate the launch of the Swadeshi Movement and promote India's centuries-old handloom tradition.
