‘Gyanesh Kumar will go to jail’: Rahul Gandhi warns of legal action over ‘vote chori’
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday launched a sharp attack on Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at the INDIA bloc’s mega rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan, accusing him of trying to silence the people’s voice and warning that he would face legal action over alleged electoral manipulation.
Addressing supporters after the Opposition alliance’s ‘Chalo Dilli’ march, Gandhi said Kumar had committed a serious crime by allegedly undermining the country’s democratic spirit. He also named Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah, claiming that both were unsettled by the Opposition’s campaign.
“Gyanesh Kumar is unable to sleep at nights. He has carried out the biggest crime. He has tried to silence the voice of people, strangulate our country. Neither Modi nor Amit Shah are able to sleep. We will bring back country on the right path,” Gandhi said.
‘We believe in non-violence’
Gandhi said the Opposition did not hate Modi, Shah or Kumar, but accused them of attacking the Constitution and the country's democratic values.
“We do not hate you or Gyanesh Kumar. We believe in non-violence. But you have attacked the spirit of this country, the Constitution of this country. I have no enemies. Modi, Amit Shah or Gyanesh Kumar, but for us the voice of people is even more important,” he said.
He warned that those responsible would be held accountable and would not be able to evade action.
“You will not be able to run anywhere. You will remain here. Action will be taken against you, Amit Shah and Gyanesh Kumar,” Gandhi said.
Rahul warns of legal action over alleged vote theft
The Congress leader also challenged the Prime Minister’s assertion that he would remain in office, saying the Opposition would pursue legal action over what it describes as vote theft.
“Amit Shah says Narendra Modi will not go anywhere. We are saying we will not let him go anywhere. We will take legal action against you and the country will seek justice for this vote chori,” Gandhi said.
He further accused the Chief Election Commissioner of enabling alleged electoral manipulation and declared that Kumar would face imprisonment.
“Gyanesh Kumar will go to jail as he has enabled the ‘vote chori’. This is not an ordinary theft. This is treason,” Gandhi said.
The INDIA bloc organised the rally to protest alleged irregularities in the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demand Kumar’s resignation. The alliance’s ‘Chalo Dilli’ march began at the Minto Road-Connaught Place junction before proceeding towards Ramlila Maidan.
The mobilisation was also part of a wider Opposition campaign alleging large-scale voter deletions and seeking accountability from the poll panel. On Saturday, INDIA bloc leaders had held a symbolic ‘public impeachment’ of Kumar at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence, adopting a resolution against him.
