Delhi Police files FIR over abusive posts against PM Modi, seeks details from X

The Delhi Police have issued notices to several social media accounts, including some associated with news portals, seeking details of users accused of posting abusive content against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and members of the security forces during the recent student protests in the national capital and other parts of the country.

According to sources, notices have been served to a number of X (formerly Twitter) accounts, asking platform operators to provide information about individuals who allegedly used offensive language in posts related to the demonstrations. The exact number of accounts that have received such notices has not been disclosed.

The action follows a review of social media activity surrounding the protests. Police officials have examined posts, videos and comments shared across multiple platforms to determine whether any content violated legal provisions or posed a threat to public order.

Earlier, Delhi Police had stated that it had identified more than 400 social media accounts allegedly linked to Pakistan that were circulating misinformation, fabricated narratives and AI-generated deepfake content connected to the protests.

Two days ago, the police also directed several social media intermediaries to remove posts and videos containing abusive remarks against the Prime Minister that were uploaded during demonstrations at Jantar Mantar and in the aftermath of the violence linked to the July 20 'Sansad Chalo' march.

Police officials said their social media monitoring unit has been tracking online activity throughout the protests. According to the force, multiple posts containing offensive language targeting the Prime Minister appeared across different platforms during the agitation and subsequent incidents of violence in Delhi.

Upon identifying objectionable material, the police have been issuing notices to the concerned social media platforms, directing them to remove the content in accordance with applicable legal provisions.

Officials said a number of posts and videos containing abusive comments have already been taken down following these notices. They added that cyber and social media teams continue to monitor online platforms for fresh content linked to the protests and will initiate further action wherever violations are detected.
