Delhi on high alert for CJP protest, 23,000 Central Forces deployed
As part of the security preparations, approximately 150 body-worn cameras have been issued to police personnel deployed in central Delhi. The devices are expected to record interactions between officers and demonstrators, particularly during crowd-control operations and possible confrontations.
The decision follows allegations of manhandling and sexual harassment made by three women journalists during an earlier protest against the Chief Election Commissioner at Jantar Mantar. Delhi Police have denied the allegations, while officials have maintained that video recordings could provide evidence in the event of disputes involving protesters and security personnel.
CJP vows to continue protest
CJP co-convener Saurav Das on Thursday questioned the police's efforts to discourage citizens from participating in the demonstration, asserting that peaceful protest was a constitutionally protected right. He maintained that the organisation would proceed with its mobilisation and challenged authorities to provide access to Jantar Mantar.
Meanwhile, Delhi Aam Aadmi Party president Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged that several students and volunteers associated with AAP and ASAP had been detained and taken to undisclosed locations. He also claimed that police and paramilitary personnel had reached AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar's residence ahead of the planned demonstration.
The heightened security arrangements follow several days of protests in the national capital over the electoral roll revision exercise, during which opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were detained. With the CJP preparing for another major demonstration, authorities are maintaining a heightened security presence across central Delhi and key entry points to the city.
