Defence ministry inks Rs 4,106-crore contracts for IAF communication satellite, Navy torpedoes

Rs 2,563-crore GSAT-7C satellite to strengthen secure communications and operational effectiveness of Indian Air Force assets

The Defence Ministry on Thursday signed two major contracts worth approximately Rs 4,106 crore for the acquisition of a dedicated communication satellite for the Indian Air Force (IAF) and indigenous heavyweight torpedoes for the Indian Navy, in a move aimed at strengthening the operational capabilities of the armed forces and promoting domestic defence manufacturing.

The contracts, awarded to New Space India Limited (NSIL) and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), cover the GSAT-7C communication satellite and Varunastra ship-launched anti-submarine torpedoes, respectively.

According to the ministry, the agreements represent another step towards strengthening India's indigenous defence capabilities and reducing dependence on foreign suppliers for critical military technologies. The contracts were signed in New Delhi in the presence of Additional Secretary and Director General (Acquisition), Department of Defence, A Anbarasu.

The first contract, valued at Rs 2,563 crore, was signed with Bengaluru-based New Space India Limited for the acquisition of GSAT-7C, a dedicated communication satellite intended to enhance the Indian Air Force's operational communications.

The satellite will be indigenously designed, developed and manufactured, reflecting India's growing capabilities in space technology and military communication systems.

"This indigenously designed, developed and manufactured satellite will enhance the secure, resilient and seamless communication capabilities for the assets of the Indian Air Force, thereby strengthening operational effectiveness," the Defence Ministry said in a statement.

The satellite is expected to strengthen the IAF's ability to maintain reliable communication links among its operational assets, an increasingly important requirement in modern warfare involving geographically dispersed forces and sophisticated combat platforms.

Dedicated military communication satellites play a crucial role in ensuring the timely exchange of information, supporting coordination between operational units and maintaining connectivity during complex missions.

Unlike conventional communication networks, satellite-based systems can provide connectivity across vast geographical areas, including regions where terrestrial infrastructure is limited or unavailable.

The GSAT-7C project is intended to reinforce the IAF's communications infrastructure while supporting the broader objective of developing critical defence technologies within the country.

The second contract, worth Rs 1,543 crore, was signed with Hyderabad-based Bharat Dynamics Limited for the procurement of Varunastra heavyweight torpedoes for the Indian Navy.

Varunastra is an indigenously developed, ship-launched anti-submarine torpedo designed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), a laboratory under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

The weapon system is intended to detect, track and engage hostile submarines, strengthening the Navy's ability to counter underwater threats.

According to the Defence Ministry, Varunastra incorporates advanced manoeuvring capabilities and can engage enemy submarines at long ranges, enhancing the Navy's anti-submarine warfare capabilities.

The acquisition is expected to strengthen the combat readiness of Indian naval platforms equipped to deploy heavyweight torpedoes, providing an indigenous weapon system for operations against hostile submarines.

Anti-submarine warfare has become an increasingly important component of maritime security, with modern submarines capable of conducting surveillance, disrupting shipping routes and threatening naval vessels.

Advanced torpedoes form a critical part of a navy's underwater warfare capabilities, enabling surface warships to respond to submarine threats.

Both contracts place significant emphasis on indigenous development and production, consistent with the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make-in-India initiatives.

New Space India Limited, the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), is responsible for commercialising space technologies and supporting the development of satellite-based services and infrastructure.

Its involvement in the GSAT-7C project reflects the increasing integration of India's domestic space capabilities with the technological requirements of the armed forces.

Bharat Dynamics Limited, a defence public sector undertaking, manufactures guided missiles and underwater weapons and has been involved in the production of indigenous weapon systems for the Indian armed forces.

The Varunastra contract is expected to support domestic manufacturing capabilities in advanced underwater weapons while drawing upon technologies developed by Indian defence research establishments.

The ministry said the agreements would contribute to advancing domestic defence manufacturing and strengthening self-reliance in strategically important technologies.

The two acquisitions address distinct operational requirements of the armed forces, with the communication satellite intended to improve the Air Force's connectivity and the torpedoes designed to enhance the Navy's underwater combat capabilities.

Secure communications are central to modern air operations, where coordination between aircraft, command centres and other military assets can influence the effectiveness of missions.

Similarly, the ability to detect and engage hostile submarines remains essential for protecting naval formations, maritime infrastructure and strategic sea routes.

The contracts also underline the importance of developing domestic expertise in complex defence systems that require specialised research, manufacturing capabilities and technological integration.

By procuring an indigenous military communication satellite and domestically developed heavyweight torpedoes, the Defence Ministry is seeking to strengthen operational preparedness while supporting India's long-term objective of greater technological self-reliance in defence production.
