Deepti Gaur Mukerjee appointed Higher Education Secretary in top bureaucratic reshuffle

Senior bureaucrat Deepti Gaur Mukerjee has been appointed as the new Secretary of the Department of Higher Education as part of a top-level bureaucratic reshuffle carried out by the Centre on Monday. Mukerjee, a 1993-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, is currently serving as Secretary in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved her appointment as Secretary, Department of Higher Education, according to an order issued by the Personnel Ministry late on Monday night.

She succeeds Vineet Joshi, who was appointed Secretary in the Ministry of Panchayati Raj last month. Mukerjee takes charge of the Higher Education Department at a significant time, with the education system facing heightened scrutiny in the wake of the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) paper leak controversy and the wider debate over the integrity of competitive examinations.

Pallavi Jain Govil to take over Corporate Affairs Ministry

As part of the same reshuffle, Youth Affairs Secretary Pallavi Jain Govil has been appointed as the new Corporate Affairs Secretary, succeeding Mukerjee. Govil is also a senior IAS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre and has held several important positions in the Union and state governments. The Corporate Affairs Ministry is responsible for administering the country’s corporate regulatory framework, including implementation of the Companies Act and oversight of corporate governance and related matters.

In another appointment approved by the government, Sushil Kumar Lohani, currently serving as Officer on Special Duty in the Cabinet Secretariat, has been appointed Chairman of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI). The IWAI, which functions under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, is responsible for the development and regulation of inland waterways for shipping and navigation.

The latest appointments are part of changes at the senior-most levels of the Union bureaucracy, with Mukerjee now set to oversee the government’s higher education policy and administration at a time when examination reforms, institutional accountability and the implementation of education policies remain major areas of focus.
