33 attacks in 5 years: US records highest number of incidents involving Indians

The United States recorded the highest number of attacks on Indian nationals living abroad over the past five years, the government informed Parliament on Thursday.

Between 2021 and 2025, 33 attacks on Indian nationals were reported from the US, according to data shared by the Centre. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) followed with 32 incidents, while the United Kingdom and Canada recorded 31 and 30 attacks, respectively. Ireland reported 24 such instances during the same period.

Indian missions monitoring incidents

Responding to the issue in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said Indian Missions and Posts continue to monitor incidents involving Indian nationals and take up cases with authorities in the countries concerned.

“Indian Missions/Posts remain vigilant and closely monitor any untoward incidents affecting Indian nationals abroad. Such incidents are immediately taken up with the authorities concerned of the host country to ensure that the cases are properly investigated and the perpetrators are punished as per their domestic laws," Singh told the Rajya Sabha.

The government’s response comes amid continued concerns over the safety of Indians living, studying and working abroad.

Recent incidents raise safety concerns

Several incidents involving Indian nationals have drawn attention in recent years.

Recently, a 26-year-old Indian-origin woman was killed in Toronto, Canada. Police said she was shot in a “targeted attack" near Humberwood Boulevard and Rexdale Boulevard.

The killing is among incidents that have renewed concerns about the safety of Indians in Canada and other countries.

The death of Indian student Vivek Saini in Georgia in 2024 also drew widespread attention. Saini was killed in an attack in the US state, adding to concerns surrounding the safety of Indian students abroad.

Safety of Indians abroad remains a concern

The data presented in Parliament covers reported attacks on Indian nationals between 2021 and 2025 across several countries. The figures put the US at the top of the list, followed closely by the UAE, UK and Canada.

Indian diplomatic missions and posts are responsible for monitoring such incidents and coordinating with local authorities when Indian nationals are affected.

The government has said such cases are taken up with the authorities of the host country to ensure investigations are conducted and action is taken against those responsible under local laws.
