WhatsApp rolls out parental controls for teens; parents still cannot read chats

Parents had gained control over privacy settings, group activity, Channels, Status and teenagers’ access to Meta AI

Meta-owned WhatsApp has introduced optional parental controls for teenagers, allowing parents to manage key privacy and safety settings without giving them access to their children’s private messages or calls. The move comes as technology companies face growing pressure globally to strengthen protections for younger users online.

The controls are designed for users aged 13 to 17 and require a parent or guardian to link their WhatsApp account with the teenager’s account. Both sides must agree to the linking process, while a parent-set PIN prevents selected settings from being relaxed without parental approval.

Parents get more control

Parents can choose privacy settings governing who can see their teenager’s profile photo and who can add them to groups. They can also receive notifications about certain activity, including when their teenager joins or leaves a group or when a group they belong to grows significantly in size.

The system is intended to give parents greater visibility into their teenager’s interactions without allowing them to monitor the substance of conversations. Parents can adjust or switch off the controls as their teenager grows older or family preferences change.

Chats remain private

WhatsApp has stressed that parental controls do not allow parents to read personal messages or listen to calls. Conversations remain protected by end-to-end encryption, meaning the linked parent does not gain access to their content.

This distinction is central to the new system. Rather than functioning as a tool for reading conversations, the controls concentrate on account settings, contacts, groups and selected platform features while preserving the privacy of individual chats.

Status and Channels covered

Parents can also determine how their teenagers use Channels and Status. This includes controls over whose Status updates teenagers can view and who is permitted to see the updates they post themselves.

The controls extend to Meta AI, where parents can choose between the standard setting intended for users aged 13 and above and a stricter “Limited Content” option. The latter provides additional restrictions on the kind of AI-generated content available to younger users.

Different from pre-teen accounts

The latest controls for teenagers are distinct from the parent-managed accounts WhatsApp introduced earlier for younger users. Those accounts are more restrictive and give parents greater control over who can contact their child, the groups they can join and requests received from unknown contacts.

For teenagers, WhatsApp is taking a less restrictive approach that gives families oversight of selected settings while allowing young users greater independence. The controls are optional and are being rolled out gradually, meaning availability may vary by region.
