Renault Duster hybrid to launch on October 17 with 160hp E-Tech powertrain

Renault is set to launch the strong-hybrid version of the new Duster in India on October 17, expanding the midsize SUV’s line-up with an electrified powertrain ahead of the festive season. The Duster hybrid will introduce Renault’s E-Tech technology to India and join the existing 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol versions.

The new powertrain will also give Renault a direct rival to strong-hybrid versions of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. With no diesel engine available on the new Duster, Renault is positioning the hybrid as its efficiency-focused alternative for buyers who want lower fuel consumption without moving to a fully electric vehicle.

Gets 1.8-litre engine

At the heart of the Duster hybrid is a 1,789cc, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with two electric motors. One is a 20hp motor-generator, while a second 49hp traction motor can directly drive the wheels.

The E-Tech system produces a combined 160hp and 172Nm and draws power from a 1.4kWh battery pack. Renault says the technology has benefited from its experience in Formula 1 and has been engineered to switch between petrol and electric propulsion depending on driving conditions.

Unlike a conventional mild-hybrid system, the Duster can move solely on electric power for portions of a journey without requiring the battery to be plugged in. Renault has claimed the system can enable electric running for up to 80 per cent of city driving under suitable conditions, with regenerative braking replenishing the battery while the vehicle is on the move.

Different hybrid approach

The Duster’s E-Tech technology takes a different mechanical approach from the strong-hybrid system found in some of its key rivals. Instead of a conventional CVT arrangement, Renault uses a multi-mode automatic transmission designed to manage power from the combustion engine and electric motors.

The system can operate in different configurations depending on speed, battery charge and power demand. At lower speeds, the electric motor can propel the SUV, while the petrol engine can join in when additional performance is required or operate to replenish the battery.

Renault has not yet announced an official India fuel-efficiency figure for the hybrid. That number, along with the complete variant line-up and prices, is expected to be revealed when the model is launched on October 17.

Third Duster powertrain

The strong hybrid will sit alongside the two turbo-petrol engines already offered with the Duster. The entry-level 1.0-litre turbo-petrol produces 100hp and 160Nm, while the more powerful 1.3-litre turbo-petrol develops 163hp and 280Nm.

The 1.0-litre unit is paired with a six-speed manual gearbox, while the larger turbo-petrol is available with manual and dual-clutch automatic transmission options. The hybrid will be automatic-only, giving Renault three distinct powertrain choices across the Duster range.

The new Duster itself marked the return of one of Renault’s most recognisable nameplates to India after the previous-generation SUV was discontinued in 2022. The current model is priced between Rs 10.49 lakh and Rs 18.49 lakh, ex-showroom, before the addition of the strong-hybrid version.

Price key to positioning

Pricing will be crucial to the hybrid’s prospects because the electrified powertrain is expected to occupy the top end of the Duster range. Renault will have to balance the additional cost of the E-Tech hardware against established strong-hybrid competitors in India’s fiercely contested midsize SUV segment.

The Duster hybrid will also arrive at a time when manufacturers are expanding electrified options beyond battery-powered vehicles. Strong hybrids have emerged as an alternative for customers seeking improved urban efficiency without having to depend on external charging infrastructure.

Renault’s October 17 announcement will therefore reveal more than just the price of another Duster variant. It will show how aggressively the French carmaker intends to position its first E-Tech strong hybrid in India as it attempts to build on the return of the Duster nameplate.
