Pay Rs 350, cross your local toll plaza unlimited times: NHAI pass explained
Residents living near selected toll plazas can now apply for a digital local pass without visiting a toll booth or submitting physical documents. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has expanded its digital local pass facility to 121 toll plazas across the country.
The pass is available through the RajmargYatra app and allows eligible residents to make unlimited crossings at their designated toll plaza for a fixed monthly fee.
Who can apply for the local pass?
The facility is meant for residents who live within a 20-kilometre radius of a participating toll plaza. It is available only for non-commercial vehicles.
The entire verification process is digital. Address details are checked through DigiLocker, while vehicle information is validated using the VAHAN database. The applicant's linked FASTag credentials are also used during the process.
Earlier, residents had to visit toll plazas and provide physical documents. Under the new system, the application can be completed online through the RajmargYatra app.
How much does the monthly pass cost?
Under the applicable National Highway user fee rules, the monthly local pass costs Rs 350 for eligible residents using non-commercial vehicles.
Once issued, the pass has to be presented at the toll gate for clearance. For residents using toll plazas covered by the digital system, obtaining the pass is particularly important as transactions are increasingly being linked directly to FASTag.
Why is NHAI moving to digital passes?
The initiative is linked to India's move towards Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF), a barrier-free tolling system designed to allow vehicles to pass through toll points without stopping.
MLFF was first introduced at the Mundka-Bakkarwala Toll Plaza in Delhi in July 2026. It is now operational at six locations: Choryasi, Mundka, Daulatpura, Gharaunda, Manoharpur and Shahjahanpur.
Officials found that some residents within the 20-kilometre zone were receiving e-notices for unpaid tolls after human intervention at toll booths was removed. The digital local pass is intended to address this issue. Failure to obtain the pass could result in penalties, including payment of double the toll amount.
More toll plazas added
The RajmargYatra app now carries the updated list of toll plazas offering the facility. New additions include Bartana in Haryana, Bharatkund in Uttar Pradesh, Bhramanapalli in Andhra Pradesh, Boothakudi in Tamil Nadu, Chikhalikala in Madhya Pradesh and Devkuli in Bihar.
