Maruti crosses 1-million sales mark in FY27; Hyundai, Tata post strong August numbers

Maruti sells 2.19 lakh units during August as strong domestic demand drives growth across major automakers

Maruti Suzuki India crossed the one-million-unit mark in total sales during the first five months of FY27, while Hyundai Motor India recorded its highest-ever domestic sales for an August and Tata Motors posted strong growth in its commercial vehicle business. Maruti sold 2,19,220 units in August, comprising 1,80,078 units in domestic sales, 5,298 units supplied to other original equipment manufacturers and 33,844 units exported. Its cumulative sales during April-August reached 11,43,365 units, compared with 8,89,070 units in the corresponding period last year.

Domestic demand drives Maruti

Maruti's domestic passenger vehicle sales climbed to 1,76,971 units during August from 1,31,278 units a year earlier. Utility vehicle sales rose to 79,045 units from 54,043 units, while sales of compact and mid-size passenger cars increased to 77,166 units from 59,597 units. Overall, the country's largest carmaker recorded a 21.3 per cent year-on-year increase in total August sales, helped by robust domestic demand.

Hyundai records best August

Hyundai Motor India reported domestic sales of 54,396 units, up 23.6 per cent from a year earlier and its highest-ever figure for an August. Total sales, including exports, increased 8.8 per cent to 65,796 units. Domestic sales during April-August were also 12.6 per cent higher year-on-year. Managing Director and CEO Tarun Garg attributed the performance to the popularity of the company's product portfolio. Hyundai, however, said exports during August were affected by logistical constraints arising from the conflict in West Asia and the broader geopolitical environment.

Tata CV sales surge

Tata Motors also reported strong commercial vehicle sales, with domestic volumes rising 33 per cent to 36,619 units in August. Heavy commercial vehicle truck sales increased 42 per cent to 10,612 units, while intermediate and light-medium commercial vehicle truck sales grew 20 per cent to 6,859 units. Passenger carrier sales rose 31 per cent to 4,701 units, while small commercial vehicle cargo and pickup sales increased 34 per cent to 14,447 units.

The strong numbers across major manufacturers came as India's automobile market maintained demand momentum ahead of the festive season, although industry experts expect year-on-year growth rates to moderate during the second half of the financial year as the favourable base effect diminishes.
