Mahindra XUV 3XO CNG to debut on October 15, launch expected by year-end

The upcoming CNG variant was expected to feature a factory-fitted kit paired with the 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine

Mahindra is set to unveil the CNG-powered version of its popular XUV 3XO compact SUV on October 15, expanding the model's powertrain options as the domestic automaker looks to strengthen its presence in India's growing market for alternative-fuel vehicles.

The upcoming model will become the fourth powertrain option in the XUV 3XO range, joining the existing petrol, diesel and electric versions. The company has released a teaser indicating the arrival of the CNG variant, although its detailed specifications and pricing have yet to be officially announced.

The new variant is expected to be launched commercially before the end of 2026, with prices likely to be announced in the weeks following its unveiling.

Turbo-petrol engine expected

The XUV 3XO CNG is expected to feature a factory-fitted CNG system paired with Mahindra's 1.2-litre multi-point fuel injection (MPFI) turbo-petrol engine, which currently produces 111hp in its petrol configuration.

Mahindra also offers a more powerful 131hp, 1.2-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine in the XUV 3XO range. However, the CNG version is expected to use the MPFI unit because of its relatively simpler engineering and lower adaptation costs.

The company has not disclosed the power and torque figures for the CNG variant. Such engines generally produce lower output when operating on CNG than on petrol, although the extent of the reduction will become clear only after the official specifications are released.

One of the major considerations will be the placement of the CNG cylinders. The XUV 3XO currently offers 295 litres of boot space, among the smallest capacities in its segment.

Installing a conventional CNG cylinder could further reduce luggage capacity. Mahindra may therefore consider a dual-cylinder arrangement, similar to the system used by Tata Motors, or an alternative placement to preserve usable storage space.

Competition in compact SUV segment

The introduction of the XUV 3XO CNG will place Mahindra in direct competition with the CNG versions of the Tata Nexon and Maruti Suzuki Brezza.

Although CNG has become increasingly popular among buyers seeking lower running costs, relatively few compact SUVs currently offer factory-fitted CNG systems.

Mahindra's entry into this category is expected to broaden consumer choice and help the company attract buyers who want SUV styling and features without the higher running costs associated with conventional petrol vehicles.

The move will also give the XUV 3XO one of the most diverse powertrain portfolios in the compact SUV segment.

Stricter emission norms

The expansion into CNG comes as Indian automakers prepare for the proposed Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE III) norms, scheduled to take effect from April 2027.

These regulations are intended to encourage manufacturers to improve the overall fuel efficiency of their vehicle fleets and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

For Mahindra, which derives a significant proportion of its sales from diesel-powered SUVs, expanding its portfolio of CNG and electric vehicles could help balance fleet-wide emissions.

While the company has previously offered CNG options in commercial pickup vehicles and conversion kits for models such as the Logan and Verito, the XUV 3XO will be the first factory-fitted CNG model in its current passenger vehicle portfolio.

Prices likely to carry premium

The XUV 3XO CNG is expected to command a premium of approximately Rs 1 lakh over an equivalent petrol-powered variant, although Mahindra has not confirmed its pricing strategy.

The company is also yet to announce the CNG variant's fuel efficiency, transmission options, available trims and final equipment list.

These details are expected to emerge closer to the unveiling on October 15, with the commercial launch likely to follow later in the year.

The introduction of the CNG version will strengthen Mahindra's position in the competitive compact SUV market while giving cost-conscious buyers another alternative to conventional petrol and diesel vehicles.
