BYD’s 1,150hp Denza Z9 GT headed to India, launch expected by the end of 2026

Luxury electric shooting brake promises supercar performance, 600km range and nine-minute charging as BYD prepares Denza’s India entry

Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD is preparing to bring its luxury Denza brand to India, with the spectacular Z9 GT electric shooting brake expected to arrive by the end of 2026 alongside the D9 luxury MPV, marking the company's most ambitious attempt yet to enter the country's high-end electric car market.

The Denza Z9 GT will sit well above BYD's existing Indian portfolio and is expected to arrive as a completely built unit. The flagship electric version uses three motors producing more than 1,150hp, giving the five-metre-long grand tourer performance figures normally associated with supercars. Its arrival would also introduce Indian buyers to some of BYD's most advanced technology, including ultra-fast charging, independent rear-wheel steering and the company's latest battery architecture.

Over 1,150hp from three electric motors

The headline figure is the Z9 GT's tri-motor electric powertrain, which produces around 850kW, or more than 1,150hp, and 1,210Nm of torque. The system uses one motor at the front and two independently controlled motors at the rear, providing all-wheel drive and allowing the vehicle's electronics to precisely distribute power between the wheels. Despite weighing close to three tonnes, the high-performance Z9 GT can accelerate from 0-100kph in around 2.7 seconds, placing it in the territory of considerably more expensive performance cars.

The Z9 GT is also equipped with independent rear-wheel steering, with the rear wheels capable of turning separately to improve both manoeuvrability and high-speed stability. The technology allows unusual manoeuvres such as extremely tight turns and a sideways “crab walk”, which could prove particularly useful for manoeuvring the 5,195mm-long car in confined spaces. At nearly two metres wide, the Z9 GT is comparable in overall footprint to large European luxury grand tourers.

Denza positions the Z9 GT as a shooting brake rather than a conventional SUV or sedan, combining a low-slung performance-car profile with a long roof and a more practical rear luggage area. Its design was developed under BYD design chief Wolfgang Egger, whose previous work included stints with European luxury marques.

600km range, nine-minute charging

The India-bound electric Z9 GT is expected to use a 122.5kWh Blade battery, with the international specification offering a claimed range of around 600km under the WLTP testing cycle in high-performance configuration. The battery is integrated with BYD's latest high-voltage architecture and Flash Charging technology.

The charging capability is among the car's most striking technical features. Denza's latest system can accept charging power of up to 1,500kW under suitable conditions, with the company claiming that its Flash Charging technology can take the battery from 10 per cent to 70 per cent in about five minutes and achieve a near-full charge in approximately nine minutes. Real-world charging speeds in India would, however, depend heavily on the availability of compatible ultra-high-output charging infrastructure.

The Z9 GT's cabin is similarly technology-heavy. International versions feature a 17.3-inch central touchscreen, a 13.2-inch digital instrument display and another 13.2-inch screen for the front passenger, along with a massive augmented-reality head-up display. Premium versions also offer electrically adjustable seats with heating, ventilation and massage functions, powered doors and an elaborate audio system.

Denza to sit above BYD in India

Denza's arrival represents an important expansion of BYD's India strategy. Rather than positioning the marque alongside the company's existing mass-premium electric models, BYD is expected to establish Denza as a separate luxury brand with dedicated retail outlets and a more exclusive customer experience. The first showrooms are likely to concentrate on major luxury-car markets such as Delhi-NCR and Mumbai.

Denza itself has an unusual history. The company was founded in 2010 as a joint venture between BYD and Daimler, the then parent company of Mercedes-Benz. BYD gradually increased its stake before taking complete control of the brand. It has since repositioned Denza as a technology-led premium marque and begun a major international expansion, including entry into European markets in 2026.

The Z9 GT will not arrive alone. BYD is also expected to introduce the Denza D9, a large three-row luxury MPV aimed at buyers considering models such as the Toyota Vellfire, Lexus LM and MG M9. While the Z9 GT will serve as the performance and technology showcase, the D9 could potentially attract greater volumes in India's growing chauffeur-driven luxury MPV segment.

Price could cross Rs 1 crore

The Z9 GT is expected to command a substantial premium in India because it will initially be imported as a completely built unit. Estimates suggest a price in the region of Rs 1.2 crore-Rs 1.5 crore, although BYD has yet to announce official India pricing or final specifications. At that level, it would enter a segment populated by established European luxury and performance brands rather than mainstream EV rivals.

Its proposition, however, would be markedly different. Instead of relying primarily on brand heritage, Denza is expected to compete through extraordinary power output, battery technology and equipment. A 1,150hp-plus tri-motor powertrain, rear-wheel steering and ultra-fast charging would give the Z9 GT specifications that exceed many significantly more expensive electric performance cars.

For BYD, bringing Denza to India would also signal a move beyond its existing EV business into the country's premium luxury market. The Z9 GT may remain a niche product because of its expected price, but its role will extend beyond sales numbers. As Denza's technology flagship, the 1,150hp electric grand tourer is intended to establish what BYD's luxury arm can offer — and give the Chinese automaker a new weapon against established global luxury brands in India.
