BMW opens pre-orders for limited-edition M2 xDrive Turbo in India

The exclusive performance coupe had drawn inspiration from the iconic 1973 BMW 2002 Turbo, featuring distinctive motorsport styling

BMW India on Tuesday announced the opening of pre-orders for the first-ever BMW M2 xDrive Turbo Edition, a limited-production performance coupe inspired by the legendary 1973 BMW 2002 Turbo. The special edition combines heritage-inspired design elements with modern BMW M performance technology and will be available in India in strictly limited numbers.

The company said customers could pre-order the vehicle through authorised BMW dealerships across the country from October 13. Allocations will be made on a first-come, first-served basis, with the model positioned as an exclusive offering for performance-car enthusiasts and collectors.

The M2 xDrive Turbo Edition pays tribute to one of BMW's most significant performance cars, combining distinctive exterior detailing, carbon-fibre components and a powerful six-cylinder engine.

The BMW M2 xDrive Turbo Edition is finished exclusively in Alpine White, reflecting the appearance of the original BMW 2002 Turbo.

Its exterior features hand-painted BMW Motorsport stripes, a black power dome on the bonnet and the distinctive reversed 'turbo' lettering, recalling one of the most recognisable design elements of the 1973 model.

A bespoke 'turbo' emblem positioned beneath the M2 badge further distinguishes the special edition from the standard model.

Bold BMW M stripes extend across the bonnet, while carbon-fibre components, including the roof, tailgate and rear spoiler, reinforce its motorsport-inspired appearance.

Customers can also choose optional 19-inch front and 20-inch rear Gold Bronze M Performance forged wheels, adding another distinctive element to the car's exterior design.

BMW said the combination of heritage graphics and modern materials was intended to reinterpret the original Turbo's identity for a new generation of performance-car buyers.

The special-edition treatment extends into the cabin, where the M2 xDrive Turbo Edition receives several exclusive design features.

The interior includes M Carbon bucket seats, an M Alcantara steering wheel and carbon-fibre trim elements, creating a cockpit focused on the vehicle's performance character.

An exclusive 'turbo' badge integrated into the centre cupholder cover provides another reference to the original BMW 2002 Turbo.

The use of carbon-fibre components and distinctive badging is intended to give the cabin an individual identity while maintaining the contemporary design of the BMW M2.

The BMW M2 xDrive Turbo Edition is powered by a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine producing 353 kW, equivalent to 480 hp.

According to BMW, the performance coupe can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds, placing it among the company's high-performance compact sports cars.

The vehicle has an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h, which can be increased to 285 km/h with the optional M Driver's Package.

The special edition combines these performance figures with its exclusive exterior and interior features, bringing together contemporary BMW M engineering and styling references from the company's motorsport history.

The original BMW 2002 Turbo was introduced in 1973, when the global automobile industry was confronting an unprecedented oil crisis.

Despite the prevailing emphasis on fuel conservation, BMW introduced a turbocharged performance car that challenged conventional expectations of compact passenger vehicles.

Powered by a 170 hp engine, the BMW 2002 Turbo could achieve a top speed exceeding 200 km/h, an impressive figure for a compact sports sedan of its era.

The model was a pioneer in bringing turbocharging technology into series-production passenger cars, demonstrating how forced induction could significantly improve engine performance.

Its lightweight proportions, distinctive styling and performance-oriented engineering helped establish its place in BMW's automotive history.

The new M2 xDrive Turbo Edition revisits that heritage more than five decades later, incorporating design elements associated with the original model while employing modern materials and performance technology.

BMW India has confirmed that the M2 xDrive Turbo Edition will be offered in strictly limited numbers, although the company has not disclosed the exact allocation for the Indian market.

Pre-orders opened on October 13 through the authorised BMW India dealership network, with bookings to be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

The company has not announced the India price, booking amount or delivery schedule for the special edition.

With its distinctive motorsport-inspired appearance, exclusive cabin details and 480 hp powertrain, the M2 xDrive Turbo Edition is aimed at enthusiasts seeking a more individual version of BMW's compact performance coupe.

The special edition also underscores BMW's continuing emphasis on its performance heritage, drawing a direct connection between the pioneering turbocharged technology of the 1970s and the engineering capabilities of its contemporary M models.
