PM Modi’s Independence Day speech is the shortest in four years

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day address from the Red Fort on Saturday was his shortest in four years, marking a sharp departure from last year's record-breaking speech that crossed the 100-minute mark. Reports differed slightly on the exact duration of Saturday's address. Several outlets clocked the speech at about 75 minutes, while others put it at 78 minutes. Either way, it was Modi's shortest Independence Day address since 2022, when he spoke for 74 minutes.

The 2026 speech was also considerably shorter than his addresses in each of the previous three years. Modi spoke for around 90 minutes in 2023, 98 minutes in 2024 and a record 103 minutes in 2025. Last year's 103-minute address on India's 79th Independence Day was the longest Independence Day speech delivered by any Indian prime minister. It broke Modi's own record set just a year earlier, when his 2024 speech lasted about 98 minutes.

From 103 minutes to around 75

The difference between the two successive Independence Day speeches is striking. From 103 minutes in 2025, the duration fell by roughly half an hour this year. The shorter running time, however, did not mean a shortage of themes. In his 2026 address, Modi ranged across Viksit Bharat, self-reliance, manufacturing, artificial intelligence, employment and youth, nuclear energy, semiconductors, sports and national security. He also announced AI training for one crore youth and plans for free online coaching for competitive examinations.

The Prime Minister also spoke of "Shakti Ki Saptadhara", or seven streams of national strength, and warned against what he termed "Dimagi Naxalism".

Modi's speeches over the years

The length of Modi's Independence Day speeches has varied considerably since he first addressed the nation from the Red Fort as Prime Minister in 2014. His first address in 2014 lasted about 65 minutes. He extended that substantially to around 88 minutes in 2015 before delivering a 96-minute speech in 2016, which remained his longest for several years.

Modi then delivered his shortest Independence Day address in 2017, speaking for about 56 minutes. His 2018 speech lasted approximately 83 minutes, followed by 92 minutes in 2019. During the Covid-19 period, his 2020 address lasted about 90 minutes, while he spoke for around 88 minutes in 2021. In 2022, the duration came down to 74 minutes.

The speeches then became progressively longer for three consecutive years — about 90 minutes in 2023, 98 minutes in 2024 and 103 minutes in 2025 — before dropping to around 75-78 minutes this year.

2017 remains the shortest

Despite Saturday's relatively compact address, it was not Modi's shortest speech from the Red Fort. That distinction continues to belong to his 2017 address, which lasted around 56 minutes. His 2014 speech, at about 65 minutes, was also shorter, while the 2022 address lasted around 74 minutes. Sources clocking Saturday's address at 75 minutes therefore describe it as his fourth-shortest Independence Day speech overall. At the other end of the scale, the 103-minute address in 2025 remains his longest, followed by the 98-minute speech in 2024 and the 96-minute address in 2016.

13 consecutive Red Fort addresses

Saturday's address also marked another milestone for Modi as he delivered his 13th consecutive Independence Day speech as Prime Minister. That took him past Indira Gandhi's run of 12 consecutive Independence Day addresses and left him behind only India's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, in terms of consecutive speeches from the Red Fort.

Modi has addressed the country from the Red Fort every Independence Day since taking office in 2014, with the duration of his speeches frequently exceeding an hour and often stretching beyond 80 or 90 minutes. This year's address therefore stood out not only for its themes and announcements but also for its relative brevity. After three successive years in which the length of the Prime Minister's Independence Day speech increased — culminating in the historic 103-minute address last year — the 2026 edition brought the duration back to roughly the level seen four years ago.
