One of the year's most eagerly awaited celestial displays, the Perseid meteor shower, is set to peak overnight on August 12-13, offering skywatchers a chance to see dozens of meteors streaking across the night sky. The 2026 display is particularly promising because the peak coincides with a new moon, meaning there will be little moonlight to wash out the fainter meteors. Under ideal dark-sky conditions, observers could potentially see 50 to 100 meteors an hour during the most active period.

What is the Perseid meteor shower?

The Perseids are an annual meteor shower produced by debris left behind by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. As Earth travels through this trail of dust and small particles, the debris enters the planet's atmosphere at extremely high speeds.

The particles heat up and disintegrate as they encounter the atmosphere, creating the bright streaks commonly described as “shooting stars”.

Perseid meteors travel at about 59 kilometres per second and are known for being fast and bright. They can also produce fireballs and leave visible trails of light behind them.

When will the shower peak?

The Perseids reach their 2026 peak on the night of August 12 and into the pre-dawn hours of August 13.

Although meteors can be spotted earlier in the night, viewing generally improves after midnight and continues towards dawn. This is because the Perseid radiant — the point from which the meteors appear to originate — climbs higher in the sky as the night progresses.

For observers in India, the post-midnight to pre-dawn hours on August 13 offer the strongest opportunity, provided skies are clear and the viewing location has low light pollution.

Where should you look?

The Perseids appear to radiate from the direction of the constellation Perseus, which gives the meteor shower its name.

However, there is no need to stare directly at Perseus. Meteors can streak across large portions of the sky, and looking at a broad expanse overhead can actually provide a better chance of spotting them.

For Indian observers, looking generally towards the northeastern sky after midnight can help locate the region around Perseus.

Why is 2026 particularly good for viewing?

Moonlight can dramatically reduce the number of visible meteors by making the night sky brighter and drowning out weaker streaks.

This year, however, the Perseid peak coincides with the new moon, providing unusually dark conditions. That means even relatively faint meteors could be easier to spot from places away from artificial lights.

Weather and local light pollution will ultimately determine how many meteors an individual observer can see. The often-cited figure of up to 100 meteors per hour applies to excellent dark-sky conditions and should not be taken as a guarantee for every location.

Do you need a telescope?

No special equipment is required to watch the Perseids. In fact, binoculars and telescopes can make meteor watching more difficult because they restrict the observer's field of view.

The best approach is to find a dark, open location away from streetlights and buildings, sit or lie comfortably and watch as much of the sky as possible.

Observers should give their eyes at least 20 to 30 minutes to adjust to the darkness and avoid repeatedly looking at mobile phone screens, which can interfere with night vision.

Where will the Perseids be visible?

The meteor shower strongly favours the Northern Hemisphere, where Perseus rises higher in the sky. It can be observed from India as well as large parts of Asia, Europe and North America.

The Perseids are among the most popular annual meteor showers because of their combination of high meteor rates, bright streaks and occasional fireballs.

Those who miss the precise peak may still have opportunities to see Perseid meteors on surrounding nights, although the number visible generally falls as Earth moves away from the densest part of Swift-Tuttle's debris stream.
