Govt taking comprehensive steps for exam reforms, says President Murmu in address to the nation

President Droupadi Murmu on Friday paid tribute to those who suffered during the Partition of India, saying lakhs of people endured unimaginable horrors but did not give up their identity and rebuilt their lives with courage and determination. In a message on Vibhajan Vibheeshika Smriti Divas, observed on August 14, the President remembered those who lost their lives and those who were displaced during the Partition in 1947. The day is observed to commemorate the suffering and sacrifices of people affected by Partition, which led to large-scale displacement, communal violence and separation of families. The Centre had in 2021 designated August 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.

Tribute to victims

President Murmu said lakhs of people were forced to endure the horrors of Partition but displayed extraordinary courage in rebuilding their lives. "On Vibhajan Vibheeshika Smriti Divas, I pay my humble tribute to all those who suffered the horrors of Partition," she said. She said countless people faced violence and displacement and were forced to leave their homes, but remained steadfast in preserving their identity despite the enormous challenges they encountered. The President said remembering their suffering and resilience was important for the country and future generations.

Remembering Partition

Partition Horrors Remembrance Day seeks to keep alive the memory of the human suffering caused by the division of the country and honour those who lost their lives or were displaced. Partition resulted in one of the largest movements of people in modern history, with families uprooted from ancestral homes and forced to rebuild their lives amid violence and uncertainty. Commemorative events have been organised across the country to mark the occasion and acquaint younger generations with the experiences of people affected by Partition.

The observance also seeks to underline the importance of social harmony and unity while remembering the consequences of communal violence and division. President Murmu's message came as political leaders and government institutions across the country paid homage to the victims and recalled the suffering endured by millions during Partition.
