China calls for ‘closer cooperation’ ahead of Wang Yi’s visit to India on Monday

The upcoming visit is being closely watched as both sides attempt to balance competition and cooperation, with implications for trade, strategic stability, and regional dynamics

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will travel to India on Monday, Beijing confirmed on Saturday, according to Reuters. His arrival in New Delhi comes at a sensitive moment, as the two neighbours attempt to ease strains in their relationship while identifying new areas of cooperation. The confirmation ends weeks of speculation, following China’s suspension of critical mineral exports to India.

Earlier this week, reports indicated that both sides are preparing to begin talks on a trade package that could include rare earth magnets, fertilisers, and pharmaceuticals. Such discussions would signal an attempt at rapprochement even as tensions rise between Beijing and Washington, and Indian industries continue to press for faster access to vital Chinese imports. Despite the renewed dialogue, China has yet to resume shipments of rare earth magnets or fertilisers.

In April, Beijing introduced export restrictions on medium and heavy rare earth products, citing end-use regulations and “national security” concerns, after new tariffs were imposed by US President Donald Trump. The decision has raised concerns in India, given its dependence on Chinese supplies for industries ranging from electronics to transport equipment.

On Thursday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said the two countries were engaged in “interactions at various levels” and stressed that China is prepared to act on agreements reached by their leaders. He described India–China relations as a partnership with “immense potential” within the Global South, adding that closer collaboration was the “right choice” for both sides. Lin also underlined China’s readiness to strengthen political trust, expand cooperation, and manage differences constructively, including through multilateral forums such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

The upcoming visit, therefore, is being closely watched as both sides attempt to balance competition and cooperation, with implications for trade, strategic stability, and regional dynamics.
