Bus in Noida minor gangrape case had 11 traffic violations, nine challans in 23 days of Rs 56,000

The sleeper bus allegedly used in the gangrape of a minor during a journey from Greater Noida towards Delhi had a history of repeated traffic violations, with records showing 11 violations in around 11 months, including nine challans within just 23 days. Eight of the nine challans issued during the 23-day period were for overspeeding, raising questions over the vehicle’s compliance with traffic and passenger-safety norms. The bus has been seized by Delhi Police and sent for forensic examination in connection with the alleged sexual assault of the teenage Class 11 student from Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri district. The vehicle was registered at the Firozabad RTO on April 28, 2026. It received two overspeeding challans on May 12, including one near milestone 72 on the Yamuna Expressway, carrying fines of Rs 4,000 each. In June, it was challaned in Noida’s Sector 168 for changing lanes without using an indicator.

Nine challans in 23 days

Traffic violations intensified in July. The bus was challaned for speeding on the Yamuna Expressway on July 1, followed by another speeding violation at Garhi Rami in Etmadpur on July 3. Further overspeeding challans were issued on July 4, 5 and 6.

On July 8, the vehicle received a Rs 26,000 challan in Hamirpur for traffic violations. It was again challaned for speeding on the Yamuna Expressway on July 11, near Delhi’s Akshardham Temple on July 15 and once more on July 23.

The nine challans accumulated during July amounted to Rs 56,000 and remained unpaid, according to traffic records. The earlier challans issued in May and June had been paid.

Driver, conductor arrested

The traffic record surfaced as investigators continued their probe into the alleged gangrape on August 4. Police said the girl had been travelling to Noida Sector 63 to meet her cousin but mistakenly got off at Pari Chowk in Greater Noida amid heavy rain.

She subsequently boarded the empty sleeper bus after allegedly being told by its driver and conductor that they were travelling towards Sector 63. Police allege that the two men sexually assaulted the girl inside the moving vehicle and threatened her when she resisted. She was later dropped near Kashmere Gate in Delhi.

After the teenager approached police, an FIR was registered and investigators traced the vehicle. Driver Kuldeep and conductor Sandeep were arrested from a parking area in Timarpur and the bus was seized.

Investigators are also examining other alleged safety lapses involving the vehicle, including its non-functional CCTV cameras and curtains that restricted visibility inside the sleeper compartment. Police are reconstructing the bus’s route using CCTV footage and other technical evidence.

The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of the case and sought detailed reports from the police commissioners of Delhi and Gautam Budh Nagar and the Mainpuri superintendent of police within two weeks.
