98% of influenza cases in India are H1N1, but ICMR says 'no cause for alarm'

The health agency said hospitalisation remains low despite H1N1 dominating infections, with severe illness largely confined to high-risk groups

Nearly 98 per cent of influenza cases currently detected in India are caused by the H1N1 strain, but the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has said there is no reason for widespread alarm as hospitalisation rates remain low. The reassurance comes amid growing concern over a rise in influenza infections in several parts of the country. H1N1, commonly known as swine flu, has emerged as the overwhelmingly dominant strain among samples testing positive for influenza, prompting health authorities to closely track its spread.

H1N1 dominates infections

ICMR Director General Dr Rajiv Bahl said surveillance data showed H1N1 accounting for about 98 per cent of influenza cases. Despite its dominance, the available evidence does not indicate an unusually severe outbreak requiring public panic. Health authorities are particularly monitoring hospitalisation and serious illness rather than case numbers alone. According to the ICMR chief, hospital admissions remain relatively low and are being seen primarily among people considered at greater risk of complications.

Hospitalisation remains low

The high proportion of H1N1 infections does not by itself mean the virus has become more dangerous. Influenza strains can vary in prevalence from season to season, and health agencies routinely use laboratory surveillance to identify which variants are circulating.

The current pattern has nevertheless drawn attention as seasonal influenza cases rise. Delhi has also reported a significant number of H1N1 infections, prompting authorities in the national capital to review the situation and preparedness at healthcare facilities.

ICMR's assessment indicates that most infections are not progressing to severe disease requiring hospital care. The agency's surveillance network continues to track influenza activity to detect any meaningful change in the pattern or severity of infections.

Vigilance still advised

While ruling out the need for alarm, health authorities have stressed the importance of basic precautions, particularly for vulnerable people. Influenza commonly causes fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, fatigue and other respiratory symptoms, with most patients recovering without serious complications.

People experiencing persistent or worsening symptoms, particularly breathing difficulty or other signs of severe illness, should seek medical attention rather than relying solely on self-medication.

The current surge underscores the importance of continued disease surveillance as influenza viruses circulate across the country. For now, ICMR's assessment suggests that while H1N1 overwhelmingly dominates India's influenza cases, the low level of hospitalisation does not point to an unusually severe public health threat.
