'Toxic' English version opens to dismal response, sells just 450 tickets across India
Yash-starrer 'Toxic' has faced another setback at the box office, with its English version registering a dismal opening across India. Released on September 4, the version managed to sell only around 450 tickets nationwide and collected approximately Rs 1.40 lakh on its first day, Bollywood Hungama reported.
The English version was not given a wide theatrical release. It was screened across only 11 shows in four cities — Mumbai, Bengaluru, Gurugram and Noida. Mumbai and Bengaluru recorded the better response among the four, while Gurugram and Noida reportedly sold fewer than 25 tickets each.
With such limited footfalls, the English version could struggle to maintain its screen presence through the weekend. The September 5 and 6 weekend was expected to provide an opportunity for theatrical releases to gain momentum, but the opening numbers suggest limited interest in this version of the film.
Poor word of mouth weighs on film
The English release arrives just over a week after 'Toxic' opened in theatres on August 26 with its Kannada original and dubbed versions in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam.
The film had a strong start, collecting Rs 101.10 crore on its opening day. However, collections dropped sharply after the first day across languages, weakening expectations of a sustained theatrical run.
The Geetu Mohandas directorial also faced competition from other releases and struggled to maintain interest among audiences beyond Yash's fan base. The film drew criticism over its depiction of women and use of violence, contributing to negative word of mouth.
Promotional activity was subsequently scaled back, while the English-language release was expected to bring in another section of viewers.
English version offers a different cut
The English version is reportedly more than a straightforward dub, with the film's cut said to be slightly different from the original. The makers had hoped this format could create interest among English-speaking audiences.
However, its first-day performance has so far failed to generate significant theatrical momentum. With only 450 tickets sold across the country, the version has opened to a very limited response.
If the pace continues, its overall theatrical earnings could remain below Rs 10 lakh, according to the report.
