Tom Holland's Spider-Man makes history, overtakes 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'

'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' has added another major milestone to its theatrical run, overtaking 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' to become the highest-grossing film in North American box office history, according to the figures cited in the report.

After 47 days in theatres, the Tom Holland-starrer has collected an estimated USD 936.773 million in North America. That puts it just ahead of The Force Awakens, which finished its theatrical run with USD 936.6 million.

Spider-Man takes the domestic crown

Released in late July, 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' has continued to attract audiences deep into its theatrical run. Its latest box office figure has pushed the Marvel-Sony release past the 2015 Star Wars film, which had held the North American record for years.

The current top five, based on the figures cited, include 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' at around USD 936.7 million, followed by 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' at USD 936.6 million.

'Avengers: Endgame' ranks third with USD 858.3 million, while Holland's previous Spider-Man film, 'Spider-Man: No Way Home', is fourth at USD 814.8 million. James Cameron's 'Avatar' rounds out the top five with USD 785.2 million.

Lucasfilm congratulates the Spider-Man team

The record also prompted a response from the Star Wars camp. Lucasfilm congratulated the film's cast and crew through the official Star Wars social media account.

From a galaxy far, far away, everyone at Lucasfilm sends massive congratulations to Destin, Tom, everyone at Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios and the entire team behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day on setting a new domestic box office record and taking the crown from Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

Can Spider-Man cross USD 1 billion?

The next major target for 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' is the USD 1 billion mark in North America. With the film already 47 days into its theatrical run, reaching that figure will depend on how strongly it continues to perform in the coming weeks.

The film has also recorded a strong worldwide run, with its global collection reportedly around USD 2.45 billion. It is also said to have crossed USD 1 billion worldwide within six days and USD 2 billion after three weekends.

The film's reported run to USD 2 billion made it the second-fastest movie to reach that mark, behind Avengers: Endgame.
