Rajinikanth's Jailer 2 to premiere on Prime Video on November 12; check languages, cast and plot

Jailer 2 crosses ₹820 crore worldwide ahead of November 12 OTT debut

Rajinikanth-starrer Jailer 2 is set for its digital premiere on Prime Video on November 12, with the platform confirming a worldwide release across India and more than 240 countries and territories. The announcement comes even as the Nelson Dilipkumar directorial continues its theatrical run after crossing the ₹820-crore mark globally.

The sequel sees Rajinikanth reprise his role as retired jailer Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. Mohanlal, Hrithik Roshan and Vijay Sethupathi make special appearances, while Kalanithi Maran has produced the film under the Sun Pictures banner. Anirudh Ravichander has composed the music.

Jailer 2 OTT release date and languages

Prime Video announced the streaming date on November 5 through a post on its official social media account. "TIGER MUTHUVEL PANDIAN is back. RELOADED 🔥#Jailer2OnPrime, Nov 12," the platform said.

The film will be available in five languages: Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada. Its digital release will reach viewers in India and more than 240 countries and territories. The original Jailer will also be available on the platform, allowing viewers to watch both instalments of Muthuvel Pandian's story.

Rajinikanth film's box-office performance

The OTT announcement has come while Jailer 2 is still running in cinemas, an unusual development given that Tamil films typically move to streaming platforms after a theatrical window of around four weeks.

According to Sacnilk, the film had collected ₹545.30 crore gross in India by its 22nd day, while its domestic net collection stood at ₹466.22 crore. Its worldwide earnings have crossed ₹820 crore, making it the highest-grossing Tamil film of all time.

The film's global collection had crossed ₹821 crore by its 21st day, according to other box-office estimates. Its continued theatrical run has coincided with the announcement of its digital premiere.

Nelson Dilipkumar on the sequel's journey to streaming

Director Nelson Dilipkumar said the response to the first Jailer and the audience's affection for Muthuvel Pandian had been among the most rewarding parts of the franchise's journey.

"The response to Jailer was extraordinary, and the love audiences have shown for Muthuvel Pandian has been one of the most rewarding aspects of this journey. With Jailer 2, we wanted to build on that special connection while taking the story, action, scale, and emotional stakes to an entirely new level," he said.

He added that bringing Rajinikanth back as Muthuvel Pandian alongside a large ensemble cast, with Anirudh's music, had made the sequel particularly exciting for the team.

"Following the film's spectacular theatrical response, we're delighted to bring Jailer 2 to Prime Video, where it will join Jailer, taking both chapters of Muthuvel Pandian's story to audiences in India and across the world," the director said.

Cast and plot of Jailer 2

Rajinikanth returns as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, the retired jailer who hopes to lead a quiet life with his family. His plans are disrupted when an international idol-smuggling racket draws him into another dangerous mission.

He goes undercover as a driver to get close to the gang, dismantle its operations and protect his loved ones.

Besides the special appearances by Mohanlal, Hrithik Roshan and Vijay Sethupathi, the film features SJ Suryah, Shivarajkumar, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan, Ramya Krishnan, Namo Narayana and Yogi Babu in key roles.

Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, Jailer 2 is the second chapter of the franchise and follows the 2023 film Jailer. With its November 12 streaming premiere, both films will be available to audiences on Prime Video.
