Nolan's 'The Odyssey' nears $1 billion worldwide; Universal crosses major milestone
Christopher Nolan's historical epic The Odyssey is edging closer to the coveted $1 billion mark at the global box office, maintaining a strong theatrical run even after three weekends in cinemas. The film has amassed an estimated $911 million worldwide, with several key international releases still to come.
Strong Box Office Run
The film added $136.2 million globally during its third weekend, underlining its sustained appeal among audiences. IMAX screenings alone contributed $68 million, marking the format's second-highest-grossing weekend on record. The box office tally is expected to climb further as The Odyssey is yet to debut in several major territories. The film is scheduled for release in South Korea on August 5, China on August 14, and Japan on September 11, markets that are expected to significantly boost its worldwide earnings. Industry analysts estimate that the film could conclude its theatrical run with global collections ranging between $1.3 billion and $1.5 billion.
Universal Hits Milestone
The success of The Odyssey has also helped Universal Pictures achieve a major commercial landmark. The studio has now crossed $4 billion in worldwide box office revenue in 2026, driven by a string of successful releases, including The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Michael, and Nolan's latest film. Universal has generated approximately $1.53 billion in domestic markets and $2.48 billion internationally. It marks the first time since 2023 that the studio has crossed the $4 billion threshold and only the fifth occasion in its history. Of the three films that have surpassed the $1 billion mark globally this year, Universal has produced two.
Trailing Spider-Man Launch
Despite its impressive performance, The Odyssey has been eclipsed by Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which opened to an extraordinary $927 million worldwide. The Marvel release registered the second-largest global opening weekend ever, behind only Avengers: Endgame, and overtook The Odyssey's cumulative worldwide earnings within just four days of release. With major overseas markets yet to open, however, The Odyssey remains firmly on course to become Christopher Nolan's latest billion-dollar blockbuster and one of the highest-grossing films of 2026.
