Nicolas Cage's 'Spider-Noir' cancelled after one season despite 11 Emmy nominations

Nicolas Cage's 'Spider-Noir' will not return for a second season after Prime Video cancelled the eight-episode series, which became its most-nominated programme of the year

Prime Video has cancelled 'Spider-Noir' after just one season, bringing the Nicolas Cage-led Marvel series to an unexpected end. The eight-episode show had earned strong reviews from both critics and viewers and secured 11 Emmy nominations, but it will not return for a second season, Variety reported.

The decision comes as the series heads into the first weekend of the Emmy ceremonies as Prime Video's most-nominated programme of the year. 'Spider-Noir' currently has a 92 per cent critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 90 per cent audience score on the site's Popcornmeter.

The show's 1930s setting and crime-noir treatment gave the familiar superhero mythology a different backdrop, while Cage's performance was among the most discussed elements of the series.

Nicolas Cage's first regular TV role

'Spider-Noir' marked a major television milestone for Cage, giving the Oscar-winning actor his first regular TV role. The series drew from Spider-Man Noir, an alternate version of the iconic Marvel character, and placed the story in Depression-era New York.

Cage played Ben Reilly, a veteran private investigator whose life is upended by a deeply personal tragedy. He is eventually forced to confront his past while taking on the role of the city's only superhero amid the hardships of the Great Depression.

The cast also included Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Abraham Popoola, Jack Huston and Brendan Gleeson.

The series premiered on MGM+ on May 25 before arriving on Prime Video the following day.

11 Emmy nominations despite cancellation

The series also made a strong showing in the Emmy race. Nielsen's streaming content ratings put its viewing at around 2.6 billion minutes during its first six weeks.

Its 11 Emmy nominations span technical and creative categories, including production design, title design, cinematography, sound mixing, sound editing, stunt performance, original dramatic score, special visual effects, stunt coordination, prosthetic makeup and original music and lyrics.

Part of Amazon's Sony Marvel deal

'Spider-Noir' was also the first Marvel-related series to premiere under Amazon's agreement with Sony Pictures Television covering live-action projects based on characters and stories from Sony's Spider-Man universe.

Sony has more than 900 Marvel characters connected to the Spider-Man universe, giving the partnership a broad pool of properties for potential future projects. A second series under the deal is already in development and is expected to be announced soon.

Sony also continues its work on Spider-Man films, including its collaboration with Marvel Studios on Tom Holland's franchise through Columbia Pictures. 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' has grossed more than $900 million domestically and over $2.3 billion worldwide.
