Meghan Markle eyes acting comeback as she prepares to return to UK
Meghan Markle could be preparing for her most substantial acting role in nearly a decade as she and Prince Harry get ready to return to the United Kingdom with their children. The Duchess of Sussex has reportedly been offered a role in a UK-based project, an opportunity said to have played a part in the family's decision to establish a British base again after six years in California. Details of the production, including whether it is for film or television, have not been disclosed.
Reports surrounding the potential role remain cautious, with no formal announcement from Meghan or the production involved. Sources close to the Duke and Duchess have not denied that an acting opportunity is under consideration. If it goes ahead, it would represent a much more significant return to acting than Meghan's recent cameo as herself in the Amazon MGM comedy Close Personal Friends.
Back before camera
Meghan was best known as Rachel Zane in the American legal drama Suits, appearing in the series for seven seasons before leaving in 2017 as her relationship with Prince Harry moved towards marriage. Her departure effectively brought her acting career to a halt as she prepared to become a working member of the British royal family.
That position has gradually changed. Meghan returned to a film set in 2025 for Close Personal Friends, appearing as herself alongside Brie Larson, Lily Collins, Jack Quaid and Henry Golding. The cameo represented a tentative return to the screen rather than a full resumption of the career she had before marrying Harry. The latest reports suggest the project being discussed in Britain would be considerably more substantial.
The nature of the possible role remains a closely guarded secret. No character, production company, broadcaster or release schedule has been publicly identified, leaving considerable uncertainty over how far negotiations have progressed. Reports, however, describe Meghan as enthusiastic about the opportunity.
Sussexes return to Britain
The acting reports coincide with a major change for the Sussex family. Harry and Meghan are returning to Britain with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet for an extended period, with their children expected to attend school in the UK from September. It will give the family its first regular British home base since Harry and Meghan vacated Frogmore Cottage in 2023.
The move does not signal a return to royal duties. Harry and Meghan will continue living as private citizens and are expected to maintain their interests and business operations in the United States. They are also retaining their Montecito home, meaning their lives are likely to remain divided between Britain and America.
The family recently spent time in Britain, including a visit during which Archie and Lilibet met King Charles. The King has been informed of their plans to spend more time in the country, potentially creating greater opportunities for contact between him and his grandchildren.
A different second act
A return to a substantial acting role would mark another reinvention for Meghan. After leaving Suits, she spent a brief period as a working royal before she and Harry stepped away from frontline royal duties in 2020 and relocated to North America. Since then, she has pursued media, production and lifestyle ventures while she and Harry have developed projects through Archewell.
Her possible return also comes at a moment when Suits has enjoyed renewed international attention through streaming, introducing Rachel Zane and the original series to another generation of viewers. Yet there is no indication that Meghan's prospective project has any connection with Suits.
For now, the identity of the British project remains the biggest unanswered question. What is clearer is that the Sussexes' return to the UK could coincide with a significant professional shift for Meghan. Nearly a decade after she walked away from a regular acting career, the Duchess of Sussex may be preparing to make the screen a major part of her working life once again.
