Jessica Simpson to reveal life and comeback in 2027 Netflix documentary

Singer, actor and entrepreneur Jessica Simpson is opening her life to cameras once again, with a new feature-length documentary about her personal journey and decades-long career set to premiere on Netflix in 2027.

The still-untitled documentary will be directed by BAFTA nominee Joe Pearlman and will explore Simpson's evolution from late-1990s pop star to reality television personality, bestselling author and businesswoman.

The project also arrives during a new phase in Simpson's music career. After spending 15 years away from releasing original music, she returned to recording and performing in 2025 with two Nashville Canyon EPs.

Simpson described the documentary as an opportunity to begin a new chapter, more than two decades after television audiences received an unusually intimate glimpse into her private life through the MTV reality series Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica.

Cameras return after two decades

Simpson became a defining figure of early-2000s reality television when Newlyweds followed her marriage to 98 Degrees singer Nick Lachey.

The programme ran for three seasons between 2003 and 2005 and turned the couple's everyday life into a pop-culture phenomenon. Simpson and Lachey separated in 2005 before divorcing the following year.

The Netflix project will offer a considerably broader examination of Simpson's life, looking beyond her reality television years to explore her music, family, business ventures and personal experiences.

The documentary is expected to provide an intimate account of both the successes and difficult periods that shaped her public and private life.

Simpson has previously spoken candidly about those experiences in her 2020 memoir Open Book, which became a bestseller and addressed her relationships, struggles with alcohol and the pressures associated with fame.

From pop music to business empire

Simpson emerged as a pop singer in the late 1990s, releasing her debut album Sweet Kisses in 1999. She went on to sell more than 20 million records worldwide.

Her career subsequently expanded into film and television, including her appearance as Daisy Duke in the 2005 movie The Dukes of Hazzard.

Away from entertainment, Simpson developed one of the most commercially successful celebrity fashion and lifestyle businesses. The Jessica Simpson Collection grew into a major licensing brand spanning footwear, clothing, accessories and other categories.

That transformation from pop star to entrepreneur is expected to form an important part of the Netflix documentary.

The film will also explore her decision to step away from original music and the circumstances surrounding her eventual return to the recording studio.

Pearlman to direct

Joe Pearlman, who has built a reputation for celebrity and music documentaries, will direct the project.

His previous credits include Lewis Capaldi: How I'm Feeling Now, the Robbie Williams documentary series and Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts. He has also worked on a documentary project centred on football manager José Mourinho.

The Simpson documentary is being produced by Van Toffler, while Pearlman, Jonathan Silberberg and Gunpowder & Sky are serving as executive producers. Gunpowder & Sky is producing the film.

Netflix has not yet announced a precise release date beyond confirming that the documentary will arrive sometime in 2027.

A new chapter on screen

The film will find Simpson returning to a level of personal access that played an important role in establishing her public persona more than two decades ago.

This time, however, the perspective will be different. Simpson is now looking back on a career encompassing music, reality television, acting, publishing and a hugely successful consumer brand, while also documenting her return to performing.

Her musical comeback began in 2025 with the Nashville Canyon projects, marking her first collection of original songs in 15 years.

The Netflix documentary will therefore function both as a retrospective and as a record of Simpson's latest reinvention.

For audiences who first encountered her as a young pop singer and later watched her private life unfold on reality television, the film promises a chance to revisit that story from Simpson's own perspective — this time with more than 25 years of fame, setbacks and reinvention behind her.
